Short, with roughly 280 m of climb, but the first kilometre is a steep, bare granite slab with no fixed path (painted arrows only) that needs hands for balance and is very slippery when wet; the descent over the same rock needs care.

₹1,439–1,511

Per person, ex-Bengaluru, day trip. Guided price seen October 2026 from one operator only: BMC Adventures ₹1,439 + GST (about ₹1,511) for its 8 November 2026 day trek, with non-AC transport, breakfast and packed lunch. Self-guided is an estimate: bus Bengaluru–Tumakuru and a local bus or auto to the village (Indiahikes quotes ₹150–200 for an auto from the highway arch), or a shared car, plus food. Sources describe no government entry fee; villagers sometimes ask for a small voluntary contribution.

Good to know

Mobile network
Indiahikes reports good Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Jio coverage throughout the trek.
Last ATM
Madhugiri or Koratagere (about 10–12 km); none in the base village
Nearest hospital
Koratagere Government Hospital, about 12 km from the base village
Water
Last refill at the water tank in the base village (or ask in village homes); the fort pond is not drinkable. Carry about 2 litres per person.

Highlights

  • One of the Navadurgas (nine hill forts) of the Madhugiri–Tumakuru region, with three walled levels, bastions, gateways and musket holes
  • Year-round water reservoir, stables, galleries and false doorways inside the fort
  • Snake carvings on the stones around the first gateway
  • Walled summit enclosure with views north to the Madhugiri monolith and south-west to Siddarabetta
  • Far fewer visitors than neighbouring Madhugiri

Risks

  • Bare, steep granite on the lower section: very slippery in rain and when descending; go down on all fours if unsure and avoid the June–August monsoon.
  • No shade on the lower slab: heat and dehydration from March to May; start early.
  • Exposed edges on the summit walls and the steps near the top.
  • No formal path at the start (painted arrows on rock) and false routes inside the fort; carry a GPX or go with someone who knows the way.
  • Few buses: the last bus leaves the village in the early afternoon; arrange an auto or your own transport for the return.
  • On 11 May 2026 Karnataka's Chief Wildlife Warden suspended trekking paths in leopard, tiger, elephant and bear areas until each is certified safe. This hill is not on the Aranya Vihaara portal and sources describe no permit, but check locally (Koratagere/Madhugiri) that no forest or archaeology restriction applies before you go.

Questions

Do I need a permit or ticket for Channarayana Durga?

Indiahikes says no permission is needed, and Explurger's July 2026 guide says there was no official government entry fee as of 2025, though villagers sometimes ask for a small voluntary contribution. The hill is not listed on the Forest Department's Aranya Vihaara booking portal. Both guides predate Karnataka's May 2026 suspension of trekking in forest areas, so check locally before you go.

How long is the trek and how much time does it take?

Indiahikes measures about 1 km from the village to the first fort gateway and 1.2 km more to the top, so about 4.4 km round trip; BMC Adventures gives 5 km both ways. Allow 3–4 hours including time to explore the fort (about 1.5 hours up and 45–60 minutes down).

What is the best time to do the Channarayana Durga trek?

September to February. Post-monsoon months are green and the fort pond is full; winter mornings are pleasant. The monsoon makes the granite very slippery, and summer is hot with little shade.

Is Channarayana Durga suitable for beginners and families?

Yes, for reasonably fit people. It is rated moderate: there is no technical climbing, but the first steep granite section needs careful footing, especially on the way down.

How do I reach Channarayana Durga by public transport?

Take a bus from Bengaluru (Majestic) to Tumakuru, then the local bus towards Siddarabetta/Tovinakere that reaches the base village (Indiahikes lists one around 9:30 AM), or a bus or auto from Koratagere. Buses back are few and stop in the early afternoon.

Is there water or food on the trail?

No. Fill bottles at the village water tank and carry about 2 litres each. A small shop and eatery at the base sells packaged food.
