Short (about 4–5 km round trip, roughly 290 m of climb), but most of the upper trail is bare rock and boulders with no clear markings, there is no shade or water, and the rock is slippery in the rains.

Water
No water on the trail and no shops or hotels in Masanipalya; carry at least 2 litres per person and packed food from Tumakuru.

Highlights

  • Ruins of a once three-tiered hill fort, with wall remains at the second stage
  • Small Hanuman temple on the summit, visited by villagers on festival days
  • Varied approach: village mud road, a valley between rocky hills, a seasonal water canal and areca-nut farms
  • 360-degree view of Jenukallu Gudda, Hoskote Thimmappa Betta, the Devarayanadurga range and Hoskote lake

Risks

  • Above the base the route is not well marked and crosses open rock and boulders; zig-zag carefully and keep a turn-around time (Indiahikes suggests 4 PM).
  • No shade on the upper hill: heat and dehydration by late morning, especially March–May; start by about 7 AM.
  • In the monsoon the rock gets slippery and the approach runs through a flowing water canal; wear trekking shoes and use a pole.
  • Forest status of the hill is not confirmed. Karnataka's Chief Wildlife Warden suspended trekking on forest routes with leopard/elephant/bear presence on 11 May 2026 until each route is certified; check with the Koratagere forest office before going.
  • Camping on the summit is not allowed (Indiahikes); the hill is usually deserted, so go in a group.

Questions

Where does the Minchukallu Betta trek start?

At Masanipalya village, about 18 km from Tumakuru and 85–90 km from Bengaluru. Park near the kindergarten school in the village; the track beyond it to the base is rough. From Tumakuru, take a Koratagere bus to the Anjaneya Temple stop and walk about 1 km to the village.

How long and how difficult is the trek?

Indiahikes gives about 4 km in all and about 4 hours, and calls it a beginners' trek; BMC Adventures lists 6 km both ways and rates it moderate. The walk to the base is easy, but the upper part is open rock with no clear trail.

Do I need a permit or ticket?

Indiahikes says there is no entry fee or permission needed. The trek is not listed on the Karnataka Forest Department's Aranya Vihaara booking portal. Rules for Karnataka hills changed in 2025–26, so confirm locally before you go.

When is the best time to go?

It can be walked through the year, but October to February is the most comfortable. In the monsoon the streams and canal are flowing and the rock is slippery; in summer the shadeless rock gets very hot.

Is there food and water on the way?

No. There are no shops or water sources in Masanipalya or on the hill. Carry at least 2 litres of water each and packed food from Tumakuru.
