A short half-day climb of about 370 m from Tikona Peth on a clear, well-used path; operators call it a beginners' trek. The final section is a run of steep, narrow rock-cut steps with railings or steel ropes, climbed in single file, which needs care when wet.

Know before you go

Good to know

Mobile network
Limited phone signal on the fort, according to Treks and Trails India; there is no electricity on the route.
Last ATM
Kamshet, on the way from Pune (not confirmed by our sources; carry cash for village meals and parking)
Nearest hospital
Basic care in Kamshet and Talegaon; Pune for serious cases (not confirmed by our sources)
Water
Well water at the base village; the fort has old rock-cut tanks but no reliable drinking water. Operators advise carrying 2–3 litres per person. There are no toilets on the route.

Highlights

  • A pyramid-shaped hill fort above the Pavana reservoir, one of the most recognisable shapes in the Maval Sahyadri
  • Gates, bastions and steep rock-cut steps leading to the balekilla, with old rock-cut water tanks on the top
  • Darshan at the Trimbakeshwar Mahadev temple on the summit, a rock relief of Bhagwan Hanuman and the Taljai cave temple
  • Open views over the Pavana reservoir and the surrounding Maval hills
  • Old rock-cut caves near the fort; Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj took the fort in 1657, according to Wikipedia (Durg Bharari gives 1656)

Risks

  • The last section is a flight of steep, narrow rock-cut steps where only one person can climb at a time; there are railings or steel ropes on the sides. Go slowly, keep three points of contact in the rain and avoid this section in big groups.
  • Monsoon makes the steps and the dirt trail slippery; wear trekking shoes with a firm grip.
  • In the 2026 monsoon the Pune district administration listed Tikona Fort among ten Maval sites under a Section 163 BNSS order until 31 August: no entering deep water, sitting under waterfalls or selfies near cliffs. It did not close the fort to trekkers. Check current orders before a monsoon visit.
  • March to May is hot and dry on the bare hillside; Bajaj Finserv's guide advises avoiding these months. Start early and carry extra water.
  • The Vetal Gate route is steeper and rarely used; Durg Bharari says it is not for children. Stay on the main path from Tikona Peth.
  • Monsoon weekends are crowded and the steps can jam; start at first light.

Questions

How long does the Tikona Fort trek take?

Operators plan about 1.5 hours to climb from Tikona Peth, about an hour on the top and about 1.5 hours down, so 4–5 hours in all. Bajaj Finserv's guide gives about 2.5 km for the ascent, so the round trip is roughly 5 km.

Is Tikona Fort good for beginners?

Yes. Travers India grades it 'Easy (Beginners Trek)' and Adventure Club Pune says it suits beginners with moderate fitness. The only tricky part is the steep, narrow rock-cut stairway near the top, which has railings and must be climbed in single file.

When is the best time to visit Tikona Fort?

Most groups go in the monsoon, June to September, when the hills are green and the weather is cool. Bajaj Finserv also recommends winter (October to February) for clear views, and advises avoiding the hot months of March to May.

How do I reach Tikona Fort from Pune?

Take a local train or drive to Kamshet on the Pune–Lonavala route, then go about 26 km by bus, shared jeep or taxi along the Pavana road to Tikona Peth, the base village. By car the trip from Pune takes about two hours. Cars can park at the base village.

Can I camp on Tikona Fort?

Wikipedia notes that people sometimes stay the night in the caves near the entrance or on the top, but Durg Bharari says the Taljai cave is not fit to stay in during the monsoon. There are no facilities on the fort, and we could not confirm current rules on night stays, so ask locally first.
