Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Most networks work at Lohajung; signal is weak or absent on the trail and at the campsites (BSNL intermittent).
- Last ATM
- Rishikesh is the safe last ATM; carry ₹4,000-5,000 in cash for transport and the base camp.
- Nearest hospital
- Primary Health Centre at Dewal, about 30 km from Lohajung (basic); Gopeshwar, the Chamoli district headquarters, for serious cases
- Water
- Refill points about 3 hours into day 2 and at the lunch stop; none between Gujreni and Tilandi, so carry 2 litres; streams on the descent from Brahmatal. In deep winter water at the upper camps may have to be melted from snow. Boil or treat all water.
Highlights
- Two lakes on one trek: forest-ringed Bekaltal on day 2 and Brahmatal, frozen in winter, below the ridge
- Ridge walk from Tilandi and Jhandi Top with close views of Mt Trishul and Nanda Ghunti, and Chaukhamba, Neelkanth and Hathi Ghoda further off
- Old oak and rhododendron forest between Lohajung and Bekaltal, with rhododendrons in bloom in March and April
- One of the few Himalayan treks run right through January and February, with snow from Lohajung in deep winter
- Sunrise and sunset from the Tilandi ridge campsite
Risks
- Monsoon (roughly late May to early September): Indiahikes says the trail is inaccessible and not worth the risk, and Himalaya Shelter does not recommend July-September because of slippery trails, landslides and road blocks to Lohajung. No formal closure was found; plan for late September to April.
- In peak winter, snow can stop groups short of Brahmatal lake or Brahmatal Top; microspikes and gaiters are needed on the ridge.
- Night temperatures fall to about -8 °C at the camps in December to February.
- Lohajung is a 10-11 hour mountain drive from Rishikesh; road blocks after rain or snow can cost a day.

Questions
Is Brahmatal good for first-time trekkers?
Yes. Operators grade it easy to moderate and suitable for beginners. Trekking days are 3-10 km on gradual trails; the hardest parts are the 7-8 hour ridge day over Brahmatal Top (about 3,734 m) and the long descent to Lohajung. Indiahikes asks that you can jog 5 km in 40 minutes.
When is the best time to do the Brahmatal trek?
December to February for snow and frozen lakes, March and April for snow patches and rhododendrons, and October-November for the clearest mountain views. Avoid the monsoon (about late May to early September), when operators say the trail becomes slippery and risky.
How do I reach Lohajung, the base village?
Lohajung is about 250-270 km from Rishikesh, a 10-11 hour drive via Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Tharali and Dewal. It can also be reached from Kathgodam (about 200-220 km) by shared jeep via Almora and Gwaldam. Most operators run a 5-7 am pickup from Rishikesh or Dehradun.
How long and how high is the Brahmatal trek?
It is a 6-day trip with four trekking days, covering about 22-28 km depending on the operator's route. The highest point is Brahmatal Top at about 12,250 ft (3,734 m); the Brahmatal campsite is lower, at about 10,190 ft.
Is there mobile network on the Brahmatal trek?
Most networks work at Lohajung, but signal is weak or missing on the trail and at the campsites. The last charging point is at Lohajung, and Rishikesh is the safest place to withdraw cash.
