A short half-day climb of roughly 170 m from the village, rated easy by the guides that describe it. The catch is the bare rock: a stretch of 10–15 very steep steps where you may need hands, and a 10 ft incline higher up. The rock gets very slippery when wet, and the path is only faintly marked.

Cost
Self-guided
₹300–800
With an operator
₹1,000–1,800
Per person, ex-Bengaluru, day trip. We found no operator publishing a current price for Varlakonda, so both ranges are estimates. Self-guided covers KSRTC buses Bengaluru–Chikkaballapur–Varlakonda and back, plus food. The guided range is based on what Bengaluru operators charge for similar nearby hills (for example Skandagiri, ₹1,175–1,500 in October 2026), not on a Varlakonda listing.

Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Indiahikes reports good 4G on all major networks for the whole trek.
- Last ATM
- About 10 km towards Chikkaballapur on the highway (Indiahikes); Chikkaballapur town has many
- Nearest hospital
- Chikkaballapur (district headquarters, about 22 km) for first care; Bengaluru for serious cases. The nearest police station is Gudibande.
- Water
- No water on the trail apart from monsoon rock pools that are not safe to drink. Carry at least 2 litres; there are tea and food stalls near the Varlakonda bus stand.
Highlights
- Long climb across red, grey and black granite slabs, with rock pools that fill in the monsoon
- Ruins of a hill fort and a small shrine of Bhagwan Shri Ram, Mata Sita and Lakshman (the Sri Seetha Rama Lakshmana temple) on the summit ridge
- Wide views of Avalabetta and the surrounding hills, small lakes and a strong sunset
- A small grassy patch that fills with red flowers in early September
- Quiet and little-visited, about 2 hours from Bengaluru by bus or car
Risks
- Very steep bare-rock sections: 10–15 steps where you may need hands, and a 10 ft incline higher up. Loose rocks and thorny shrubs, so watch where you put your hands. Go down slowly.
- The rock becomes extremely slippery in the monsoon. Avoid wet days.
- The path is only faintly marked on the rock and is easy to lose. Note the road head and head back towards it if unsure. Going with someone who knows the route is safer.
- Hardly any shade on the upper rock: heat and dehydration from March to May. Start early.
- Karnataka forest rules: on 11 May 2026 the Chief Wildlife Warden suspended all trekking paths in areas with leopards, tigers, elephants or bears 'until further orders'. Varlakonda is not listed on the Forest Department's Aranya Vihaara booking portal (checked 17 Oct 2026), and we could not confirm whether the hill is forest land. Ask in Varlakonda village or at the Gudibande range forest office before you climb.

Questions
How long is the Varlakonda trek and how long does it take?
A 2010 guide gives about 2 km each way. Indiahikes' section times add up to roughly 1–1.5 hours to the summit from the road. Allow 3 hours for the round trip with a rest at the top.
Is the Varlakonda trek suitable for beginners?
Mostly yes. It is short and rated easy, but it has a few very steep bare-rock sections where you may need your hands. Wear shoes with good grip, avoid wet days and go with someone who has done it before. The path is faint.
How do I reach Varlakonda from Bengaluru by bus?
Take a KSRTC bus from Majestic (or board at Hebbal or Kodigenahalli) to the New KSRTC bus stand in Chikkaballapur, about 60 km. Then take a KSRTC or private bus about 22 km towards Varlakonda and ask the conductor to drop you at the Varlakonda exit. Return buses to Chikkaballapur are frequent, with at most about a 45-minute wait.
What is at the top of Varlakonda hill?
The ruins of a fort, a small shrine of Bhagwan Shri Ram, Mata Sita and Lakshman, a small stone hut and a broad rock clearing. From there you see Avalabetta, the surrounding hills and several small lakes.
Do I need a permit or booking for Varlakonda?
We found no official entry fee or booking for Varlakonda, and it is not on the Karnataka Forest Department's Aranya Vihaara portal. Karnataka has tightened rules for forest treks since 2025, so check locally (the village or the Gudibande range forest office) before you go.
