Cost
Self-guided
₹100–600
With an operator
₹1,000
Per person. Guided: Treks and Trails India (treksandtrails.org) lists ₹1,000 but does not say what is included or where it starts; we found no second operator's current price. Self-guided is an estimate ex-Nashik: an ST bus or shared auto to Aashewadi Phata and back, plus water and snacks; a hired car from Nashik costs more.

Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Not documented by our sources. The fort is close to Nashik city; check coverage on top before relying on it.
- Last ATM
- Not confirmed for Aashewadi; Nashik city (about 15 km) has banks and ATMs, so carry cash.
- Nearest hospital
- Not confirmed by our sources; the nearest large hospitals are in Nashik, about 15 km away.
- Water
- Durg Bharari says the underground cistern near the temple cave holds water all year and is the only drinking water on the fort; most other tanks are not potable. Carry at least 2 litres from the village.
Highlights
- A spacious rock-cut cave on the steps that has become a temple, with murtis of Prabhu Shri Ram, Shri Hanuman, Shri Dattaguru and Durga Mata, and a weathered six-line inscription beside it
- Rock-cut steps up to the main gate carved into black rock on the south side, and a hidden second entrance along the cliff
- Many rock-cut water tanks, including one supported on pillars, and a long flat top of about 16 acres
- The fort Marathas held against a months-long Mughal siege that began in April 1682, after which the Mughals withdrew
- A short climb close to Nashik with wide views over the plains and the Peth hills
Risks
- Rock-cut steps and sloping rock become slippery in the monsoon; wear shoes with good grip and descend slowly.
- The path to the second entrance is broken and its carved steps are destroyed (Durg Bharari); keep away from that section and from the cliff edges.
- Little shade on the climb and the open top; in summer start early and carry enough water.
- Fort rules near Nashik change by season: check with the local forest office or police for any monsoon restrictions before you go.

Questions
How long does the Ramshej climb take?
Durg Bharari says the top can be reached within an hour of climbing from Aashewadi, and a full tour of the fort takes about three hours. Treks and Trails India gives about two hours for the trek.
How do I reach Ramshej from Nashik?
Take an ST bus from Nashik's CBS bus stand towards Peth and get off at Aashewadi Phata, then walk to Aashewadi village; the trail starts behind the village with the fort on your left (Treks and Trails India). The village is about 15 km from Nashik.
Is there drinking water and can I stay on the fort?
The underground cistern near the temple cave holds water all year and is the only drinking water on the fort; the temple cave can hold 15–20 people for a night (Durg Bharari). Carry at least 2 litres anyway.
Is Ramshej good for beginners?
Yes, in dry weather. It is a short climb rated easy by Treks and Trails India (Durg Bharari says medium). In monsoon go with someone who knows the route and take care on the wet rock steps.
