A short climb of about 1.4 km each way and roughly 300 m of ascent on rock-cut steps, granite slabs and grassy paths; there is no technical section, but the boulder stretch below the top is exposed, with a drop of about 700 ft beside the cliff edge, and wet rock near the first shoulder is slippery.

Cost

Self-guided

₹300–800

With an operator

₹1,000–1,500

Per person, ex-Bengaluru, day trip. We found no operator currently publishing a guided price for Harihara Betta, so the guided range is only a guide based on comparable Chikkaballapur day treks (Skandagiri packages of about ₹1,175–1,500 with transport and food). Self-guided is an estimate: bus Bengaluru–Chikkaballapur and back, a shared auto (Indiahikes quotes ₹10) or private auto to Kavaranahalli, and food and water bought on the highway, since the village has no shop.

Highlights

  • The Harihara temple halfway up, with carved stone pillars, banyan trees and a large courtyard
  • A wide grassy flatland just below the top, among granite boulders and cliffs
  • Views over the whole Chikkaballapur plain to Nandi Hills and Skandagiri from the summit
  • A short climb close to Bengaluru airport, easy to fit into half a day

Risks

  • Exposed cliff edges near the top with a drop of about 700 ft; keep away from the edge, especially in wind or rain.
  • Rock and mud turn slippery in the monsoon, above all at the first shoulder near the temple; avoid days of heavy rain.
  • Little shade on the trail: the granite gets very hot in March to May. Start early or after 3 pm and turn around by 5 pm.
  • Indiahikes reports leopard and bear sightings in the area, and the Forest Department has stopped camping on the top. In May 2026 Karnataka's Chief Wildlife Warden suspended trekking paths in leopard, tiger, elephant and bear areas until each is certified safe; Harihara Betta is not on the Aranya Vihaara booking portal, so check locally that the hill is open before you go.
  • No food or water at the base village; carry everything you need and bring all waste back.

Questions

Do I need a permit to climb Harihara Betta?

Indiahikes says no permission is needed for the day trek, and the hill is not listed on the Karnataka Forest Department's Aranya Vihaara booking portal. Camping on top has been stopped by the Forest Department. Because Karnataka tightened trekking rules in 2025–26, confirm locally before you go.

How long does the Harihara Betta trek take?

About an hour up and 40 minutes to an hour down, so 2 to 3 hours with a break at the top. The trail is about 585 m from the village pond to the temple and 845 m more to the summit.

Where does the trek start and how do I get there?

It starts at the pond (kalyani) in Kavaranahalli, also called Hariharapura, about 6 km from Chikkaballapur town. Take a bus from Bengaluru to Chikkaballapur and a shared or private auto to the village, or drive on NH44 and turn off at Harobande. Small cars manage the village lanes; large SUVs are awkward.

When is the best time to do Harihara Betta?

It can be climbed all year. October to February is the most pleasant; summer is hot on the bare rock, and in the monsoon the rock is slippery, so avoid days of heavy rain.

Is there water or food on the trail?

No. The village has no shop or hotel and its water tank is often empty. Eat in Chikkaballapur or at highway hotels and carry at least 2 litres of water each.
