Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Most networks work across much of the trail (Airtel and Jio are best); signal is patchy in the dense forest.
- Last ATM
- Pantwari (State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank and Union Bank of India)
- Nearest hospital
- Government hospital at Nainbagh for first care; Mussoorie or Dehradun (about 3 hours) for serious cases
- Water
- The last reliable source is a cemented reservoir about 2 km above Pantwari; carry at least 2 litres from there. The small kund in front of the Nag Devta temple is held sacred and is not a drinking source.
Highlights
- Summit view from 3,022 m across Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, Kala Nag, Srikanth and the Gangotri group
- The Nag Devta temple in a forest clearing below the summit, where villagers pray to the serpent deity for the protection of their livestock and carry a doli up each year for puja
- Oak, deodar and rhododendron forest, with rhododendrons in bloom in March and April
- A true weekend trek: summit and back from Dehradun in two days, with snow from December to March
Risks
- The last kilometre to the summit is steep and shaded; in winter it holds snow and ice, so microspikes and a guide who knows the trail help.
- The fast gain from about 1,420 m to 3,022 m in two days can still bring on altitude sickness.
- In the July-August monsoon the trail is slippery and muddy and views are often clouded; operators advise caution or avoid it.
- Night temperatures at the camps fall below freezing from December to February.

Questions
Is Nag Tibba good for first-time trekkers?
Yes. Operators grade it easy (Bikat, Himalaya Shelter) or easy-moderate (Himalayan Dream Treks). Expect about 5 km on day one and a long second day of 9-13 km with a steep final climb to the summit.
How far is Nag Tibba from Dehradun and how do I reach Pantwari?
Pantwari, the base village, is about 90-100 km from Dehradun, a 3-5 hour drive via Mussoorie and Nainbagh. Shared Bolero jeeps leave Dehradun Clock Tower around 6-7 am for about ₹400 a seat.
When is the best time to do the Nag Tibba trek?
September to November gives the clearest Himalayan views; December to March brings snow; March and April have rhododendron blooms. The trek is not formally closed in the monsoon, but July and August are slippery and cloudy.
Do I need a permit for Nag Tibba?
Guided groups include forest permits and camping charges in the package. We could not confirm a current official fee, so self-guided trekkers should check with the forest office before starting.
What is the Nag Tibba temple?
Nag Tibba means 'Serpent's Peak', the abode of Nag Devta, the serpent deity. His temple stands in the clearing about an hour below the summit; local villagers worship here for the protection of their cattle, and a small kund in front of it is held sacred. Remove footwear and keep the area clean.
