Highlights

  • Himalayan snow-range views from Lumsu (Luntsu) Top on a clear day
  • The old deodar-wood Devalsari Shiva temple in a deodar forest at the trailhead
  • Aglar valley forests known for birds and butterflies, with a yearly Titli Utsav butterfly festival run by the local Devalsari society
  • A ridge 'money tree' with old coins pressed into its bark

Risks

  • July and August monsoon rain brings landslide risk to the road and trail; sources advise against visiting then.
  • The ridge between Lumsu and Nag Tibba has no villages or landmarks; do not try to link the two peaks without a guide.
  • In December to February snow lies in patches, roads can be blocked and water is scarce on the ridge.
  • Published altitudes vary widely (one operator says 3,500 m); expect about 2,700 m.

Questions

How high is Lumsu Top near Devalsari?

About 2,700 m. Route makers who mapped the area give Luntsu I as about 2,700 m and Luntsu II as about 2,625 m, both lower than nearby Nag Tibba (3,022 m).

How long is the Devalsari to Lumsu Top trek?

The Lurntsu Top trail race runs from the Devalsari forest to the peak and back on the same path in about 17 km with roughly 1,050 m of climb. Trekkers usually take 1-3 days; one operator runs it as 3 days from Dehradun with a night camped on the ridge.

When is the best time for the Devalsari trek?

March to June and September to November. July and August are advised against because of landslide risk, and in December to February snow can block roads and patches of snow lie on the ridge.

How do I reach Devalsari?

Drive from Dehradun via Mussoorie to Thatyur in the Aglar valley, then 7-9 km on a rough road to Devalsari. The whole drive is about 70-80 km. The nearest railway station and airport are in Dehradun.

Where can I stay at Devalsari?

There is a small Forest Department rest house (book through the forest office in Mussoorie) and village homestays run with the Devalsari Environment Protection and Technology Development Society, which also arranges local guides.
