Short climb of about 30 minutes and roughly 60 m of height gain, but on old Vijayanagara-era stone steps that are uneven and steep near the top, with bare granite boulders to scramble over; usually climbed in the dark for sunrise, so a torch and grippy shoes are needed.

Cost
Self-guided
₹0–400
With an operator
₹500–1,500
Per person, ex-Hampi. The climb itself is free: hampi.in says the Matanga Hill tour has no entrance fee or camera charge, and listings say admission is free. Self-guided cost is only a local bus or auto from Hosapete. We found no operator publishing a separate price for this climb; the guided range is our estimate for hiring a local Hampi guide for a sunrise walk, so confirm the rate locally.

Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Mobile network works in Hampi Bazaar and generally on the open hilltop (not confirmed by a source; check locally).
- Last ATM
- Hampi has few ATMs; Kamalapura and Hosapete have reliable ATMs. Carry cash.
- Nearest hospital
- Primary health care at Kamalapura; government and private hospitals in Hosapete (about 13 km).
- Water
- No water on the hill. Carry water from Hampi Bazaar; the exposed rock gets very hot after mid-morning.
Highlights
- Sunrise and sunset from the highest point at the centre of Hampi, over the Virupaksha temple, Hampi Bazaar, the Achyutaraya temple and the Tungabhadra river
- Darshan at the Veerabhadra temple on the summit, a shrine of Bhagwan Shiva's Veerabhadra form
- The sacred hill of Matanga Rishi from the Ramayana, where Sugriva took refuge from Vali with Hanuman
- Old Vijayanagara-era stone steps, and a steeper trekker's trail for those who want more scrambling
- Part of the Group of Monuments at Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Risks
- Steep, uneven steps and boulders near the top; wet rock is slippery, so avoid flip-flops and take care on the descent in the dark.
- The hilltop and paths are not lit. Climb with a torch, go in a group or with other visitors, and do not stay on the hill after the last visitors leave (hampi.in advice). In March 2025 tourists were attacked at night near Sanapur lake across the river from Hampi, and the state asked police to step up tourist security.
- Monkeys snatch food and bags on the hill; keep food out of sight.
- March to May is very hot and the bare rock heats up; climb only at sunrise or late afternoon. Monsoon rain makes the rock slippery.
- The hill lies inside the ASI-protected Hampi World Heritage area: do not climb on monuments, and check locally for any new timing rules before a pre-dawn climb.

Questions
How long does it take to climb Matanga Hill?
About 30 minutes up from the east end of Hampi Bazaar at a steady pace (hampi.in, Evolve Back, Incredible India). Allow about 2 hours in all with time at the top for sunrise or sunset and a slow descent.
Is there an entry fee or fixed timing for Matanga Hill?
No ticket is needed: hampi.in says the climb has no entrance fee or camera charge. There are no published opening hours; for sunrise people start by about 5 am with a torch. Check locally in case rules change.
Where does the Matanga Hill climb start?
From the eastern end of Hampi Bazaar, opposite the Hampi police station, where old stone steps lead up the western face. A steeper trekker's trail lies a little to the north, and a trail over the hill also links Hampi Bazaar with the Achyutaraya temple.
Is Matanga Hill safe for a sunrise climb?
It is a popular sunrise climb, but the path is unlit and rocky. Go with a group or among other visitors, carry a torch and water, wear grippy shoes and watch for monkeys.
What is the best time to climb Matanga Hill?
October to February, when mornings are cool. Avoid the midday heat, especially from March to May, and take extra care on wet rock in the monsoon.
