  • Iron ladders and railings up the steep rock bands below the top
  • Sunrise above a sea of clouds, with views of Alang, Madan and Kulang forts and Bhandardara
  • Fireflies in the pre-monsoon season and wildflowers after the rains

Risks

  • Steep iron-ladder sections that get slippery in rain and crowded on weekends, with two-way traffic
  • Strong wind, fog and poor visibility on the summit during the monsoon
  • The Forest Department has banned entry during the monsoon in some years (to 10 August in 2025); check the current order with the Bhandardara range office

Questions

Where does the Kalsubai trek start?

From Bari village in Akole taluka. Most people reach it by road from Mumbai or Pune, or by train to Kasara and a shared jeep to Bari.

How long does the climb take?

About 3.5 to 4 hours up and 2.5 to 3 hours down; the full round trip is done in one day.

Is there anything difficult on the route?

The trail has several steep iron ladders with railings and chains near the top. They are easy in dry weather but slippery in the monsoon and hard for people with vertigo.

When is the best time to go?

September to February for clear views; September–October brings wildflowers. Monsoon treks are popular but slippery and foggy, and the Forest Department has closed the area in monsoon in some years.

Is there water on the trail?

Carry at least 2 litres. There is a well about half a kilometre below the summit, and food is available at Bari.

Is there a temple at the top?

Yes, a small temple to Kalsubai Devi stands on the summit and is open all year.
