Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Not confirmed by our sources; expect patchy mobile signal in Ratanwadi and on the fort.
- Last ATM
- Not confirmed; carry cash from Igatpuri, Akole or Rajur before heading to Ratanwadi.
- Nearest hospital
- Not confirmed; the nearest larger hospitals are in Nashik and Igatpuri, so carry a first-aid kit.
- Water
- No water on the trail itself; a cistern inside the fort holds potable water through the year (Indiahikes). Carry 2 litres and treat the water.
Highlights
- The Nedhe, a natural rock hole at the top of the fort known as the Eye of the Needle, with strong wind blowing through it
- Steel ladders and carved Ganesh and Hanuman gates on the way into the fort
- Views over Bhandardara lake and the highest Sahyadri peaks: Kalsubai, Alang, Madan, Kulang, Ajoba and Katrabai
- The Hemadpanti-style Amruteshwar temple of Bhagwan Shiva on the Pravara river at the base village
- Yellow Sonki and purple Karvi flowers on the fort in September and October
Risks
- Monsoon entry bans happen: in 2025 the Maharashtra Forest Department closed Kalsubai, Ratangad, Alang, Madan, Kulang and Sandhan Valley until 10 August (Pune Pulse, 25 Jun 2025). Check the Kalsubai-Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary office for the current year before going.
- The steel ladders over the rock patches are steep; climb them one at a time and with care, especially when wet.
- In the monsoon the trail is slippery and the descent is hard on the knees; operators warn that heavy rain and floods can delay the return.
- Cattle paths branch off the main trail below the forest; follow the wider trail and the white arrow marks, or ask villagers for the route.
- Climbing on top of the Nedhe is exposed; operators advise great care there.

Questions
How long is the Ratangad trek and how much time does it take?
Operators quote about 6 km from Ratanwadi village, though one gives 4-5 km one way. Indiahikes puts the climb at about 3 hours and the descent at about 2 hours; Mischief Treks plans about 6 hours in all including time on the fort.
Is Ratangad suitable for beginners?
Most operators rate it moderate (one calls it easy to medium, another medium to challenging). Beginners with fair fitness manage it, but there are steep sections and four steel ladders near the top.
When is the best time to trek Ratangad?
June to October for monsoon greenery and waterfalls, with Sonki and Karvi flowers in September and October; November to February for clear winter views and cave camping.
Can you stay overnight on Ratangad?
Yes. Indiahikes describes a large cave near the fourth ladder that can shelter 30-40 people, and there is a year-round water cistern on the fort.
Which base village should I start from, Ratanwadi or Samrad?
Ratanwadi, near the Amruteshwar temple, is the usual start. You can also climb from Samrad (the Sandhan Valley village) via the Trimbak Darwaja and rock-cut steps, about 6 km, and come down to either village.
