Widely called the toughest trek in Maharashtra: exposed ledge traverses, narrow rock-cut steps with sheer drops, a roughly 40 ft rock patch on Madan climbed on rope with harness and carabiners, and rappels on the way down. Both days run 8-12 hours, and it is not for beginners.

Cost

₹2,500–3,675

Per person, ex-Kasara. Guided prices seen October 2026: Treks and Trails India ₹2,500 (jeep Kasara-base-Kasara, meals, technical gear, trek leader); Bhatakna ₹2,600 (same inclusions, train to Kasara extra); Bikat Adventures ₹3,500 + 5% GST (₹3,675) ex-Kasara including forest/camping charges, gear and tents. Self-guided is an estimate: a shared night jeep from Kasara, a local guide with ropes and harnesses (Wikipedia mentions about ₹1,500 per group of 10), food carried for two days and any sanctuary fees. Doing AMK without a rope team is not advised.

Know before you go

Good to know

Mobile network
Intermittent (Bikat Adventures); expect no signal on the ledges and in the Madan caves.
Last ATM
Not confirmed; there is none at Ambewadi. Draw cash at Kasara, Igatpuri or Ghoti.
Nearest hospital
Not confirmed locally; Explurger names Nashik (about 70 km) as the nearest hospital for an emergency.
Water
Rock-cut cisterns on all three forts (11 on Alang, 2 on Madan, several on Kulang) hold rainwater, but post-monsoon levels vary; carry 3-4 litres each and treat cistern water.

Highlights

  • Three hill forts in one traverse on the Kalsubai range: Alang's huge plateau, Madan's narrow pinnacle and Kulang's long ridge
  • Night in the rock-cut caves on Madangad
  • Rope climb, exposed ledge traverses and rappels on ancient rock-cut steps
  • Views of Kalsubai, Harihar, Ratangad, Harishchandragad, Ajoba, Sandhan Valley and Bhandardara reservoir

Risks

  • Exposed ledges and rock-cut steps with a sheer drop on one side; a fall here is fatal. Helmet, harness and a rope team are needed.
  • The 40 ft rock patch on Madan has only one route up and down, so large groups queue for hours and can be caught by darkness.
  • Rock-bee attacks have been reported on the traverse; avoid deodorant, scented soap and smoke.
  • Monsoon rain from June to September makes the rock slippery and brings leeches; Explurger and Bikat Adventures do not recommend AMK in the monsoon, and the 2025 forest ban ran until 10 August. Avoid AMK in the wet months.
  • March to May is hot, and cisterns may run low; carry enough water.

Know before you go

Questions

Is Alang Madan Kulang suitable for beginners?

No. It is rated the toughest trek in Maharashtra. Explurger advises 10-15 Sahyadri treks plus at least one technical climb first. You need a head for heights, and you should go with an experienced leader who carries ropes, harnesses and helmets.

How many days does AMK take?

Usually two days: climb Alang and Madan on day 1 and sleep in the Madangad caves, then climb Kulang and descend to Ambewadi on day 2. Groups leave Mumbai or Pune on Friday night, so with travel it is a three-day weekend.

How do I reach Ambewadi, the base village?

Take the 10:50 pm slow local from CSMT to Kasara, then a pre-booked jeep via Ghoti to Ambewadi. Alternatively, drive about 145-160 km from Mumbai or 150-175 km from Pune. An MSRTC bus also runs from Ghoti to Ambewadi (32 km).

When is the best time for AMK?

October to February, with January and February the best for dry rock and clear views. Avoid the monsoon: in 2025 the forest department closed the forts until 10 August, and wet rock makes the ledges dangerous.

Is there water and shelter on the forts?

Yes. There are caves on Alang, Madan and Kulang, and rock-cut cisterns that hold rainwater. Supplies vary after the rains, so carry 3-4 litres each, and bring all your food and a stove. There are no shops on the trail.
