A short half-day climb of about 300 m: the path crosses two small hills through thick scrub and gets steep only in the last stretch below the ramparts. The eastern descent via the caves has a slippery 400-500 ft rock face and is best done with a guide.

Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Not confirmed by our sources; Boisar is a large industrial town with mobile coverage, but expect weaker signal on the forested slopes.
- Last ATM
- Boisar
- Nearest hospital
- Boisar for first care; Mumbai for serious cases
- Water
- Rock-cut water tanks on top; Durgbharari says the large tank's water is drinkable after filtering. Carry 2-3 litres from Boisar.
Highlights
- Rock-cut water tanks on the summit, including a 50 x 20 ft cistern with stone walls, and holes once used for poles of a roof that cut evaporation
- Ruined ramparts, square bastions and a west-facing gateway showing Portuguese-period building
- Views of Asheri fort, Kaldurg and the Dahanu-Boisar-Palghar plain from the top
- Large natural caves on the eastern slope, reached by rock-cut steps below the gate, with a broken idol of Bhagwan Hanuman on the way
- A quiet, non-crowded fort close to Mumbai, well suited to a one-day monsoon trek
Risks
- The steeper eastern route down past the caves crosses a mossy rock face of about 400-500 ft that is very slippery in the monsoon; do not attempt it alone, and use the western route if unsure.
- Durgbharari advises taking the little-used footpath down from the caves only with a guide; otherwise return the way you came.
- Monsoon rain makes the scrub trail muddy and slippery, and the fields at the base can be deep mud. Palghar police have issued monsoon prohibitory orders for waterfalls and water bodies in past years (for example 25 June-8 July 2024); check for any current district order before a monsoon visit.
- The top is overgrown with trees and bushes, so parts of the ramparts cannot be walked; stay on the path.

Questions
How difficult is the Asawa Fort trek?
It is a short trek of about 300 m height gain. Treks and Trails India and Durgbharari grade it medium, and Mischief Treks calls it easy and suitable for beginners. The climb from Warangade takes about an hour to an hour and a half, with only the last stretch below the ramparts steep.
How do I reach Asawa Fort from Mumbai?
Take a Western Railway train to Boisar. The base at Baripada in Warangade village, next to the Viraj Profiles factory on the Boisar-Chilhar road, is about 7 km from Boisar station and about 14 km from Chilhar on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway. By road from Dadar it is about 3 hours.
How long does the trek take?
A day. Operators start walking about 9:30 am, reach the top by 11:30, and are back at the base village by 2 pm. Mischief Treks puts the trail at about 3 km one way.
What is there to see on the fort?
Rock-cut water tanks, a large stone-walled cistern, ruined ramparts and bastions, the west gateway, and on the eastern slope three caves, two of them partly built with dressed stone. The whole top can be seen in about half an hour.
When is the best time to visit?
Mischief Treks lists June to October, when the hill is green. The trek is short and low, so it can also be done in the cooler months up to February; avoid hot afternoons from March to May.
