Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Not confirmed by our sources; expect patchy mobile signal on the upper slopes.
- Last ATM
- Manor or Wada (not confirmed by our sources)
- Nearest hospital
- Wada and Manor for first care; Palghar for district hospital care (not confirmed by our sources)
- Water
- Rock-cut cisterns on the top; Wikipedia and operators say two of the cisterns near the Hanuman idol hold potable water. Carry at least 2 litres and treat any cistern water.
Highlights
- Kohoj reflected in the heart-shaped Shelte lake at the foot of the hill
- Wind-carved, man-shaped rock pinnacles on the top that look different from every side
- A small temple of Bhagwan Shiv, rock-cut water cisterns and a murti of Hanuman ji on the fort
- Views of Tandulwadi, Takmak and Asheri forts, the Mahalaxmi pinnacle and on clear days the Arabian Sea
- History: one of the 23 forts handed to the Mughals under the Treaty of Purandar in 1665
Risks
- Monsoon (June-September) makes the rock and mud on the upper trail slippery; most falls happen on the descent.
- Palghar and neighbouring districts sometimes issue monsoon prohibitory orders for forts and water bodies; we found no order for Kohoj in 2026, but check locally before a monsoon visit.
- There is no accommodation or shop on the fort, and the Shiv temple can hardly hold two people, so it is not a shelter.
- Exposed rocky sections near the pinnacles and bastions; keep away from edges in mist or wind.
- Summer (April-May) is hot and humid in the Konkan lowlands; start early and carry plenty of water.

Questions
How high is Kohoj Fort?
Published figures disagree. Many operators repeat 3,200 ft (about 975 m) and one gives 950 m, which is the height shown on this page, but Mischief Treks gives 510 m, the Wikipedia infobox 2,000 ft, and satellite elevation data (SRTM) puts the top of the mapped fort at about 540-550 m. Treat the height as approximate.
How long does the Kohoj Fort trek take?
About 2 to 3 hours up from Vaghote (Waghote) to the plateau and roughly 5 hours for the whole walk. Travel Trikon gives a trail of about 5 km one way; organised day trips from Dadar take about 16 hours door to door.
What is the base village and how do I get there from Mumbai?
The base village is Vaghote (Waghote) on the Manor-Wada road. Drive the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway to Manor (about 104-115 km from Mumbai), turn towards Wada, and the fort is visible on the right. By train, go to Palghar and take a taxi or bus towards Manor and Wada.
When is the best time for the Kohoj Fort trek?
Treks and Trails India recommends September to February; Mischief Treks lists June-September for the monsoon and December-March for winter. Post-monsoon (September-November) gives green slopes with less risk of slippery rock.
Is there drinking water on Kohoj Fort?
Yes, some. Of the three large cisterns on the path up from the right of the Shiv temple, two hold potable water. Carry your own water as well and treat anything you drink from the cisterns.
