Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Intermittent signal around Khireshwar village; coverage drops sharply once you enter the jungle, so download offline maps.
- Last ATM
- Not confirmed by our sources; carry cash from Junnar or Pune, as Khireshwar is a small village.
- Nearest hospital
- Not confirmed by our sources; Junnar town is the nearest place for first care, Pune for serious cases.
- Water
- Streams and waterfalls cross the trail in the monsoon, but operators tell trekkers to carry 2-3 litres; treat any stream water.
Highlights
- Dense, often fog-filled Sahyadri rainforest on old shepherd trails above Pimpalgaon Joga Dam
- View of the multi-tiered Kalu Waterfall, roughly 1,200 ft high, from the plateau edge
- Stream and river crossings with dozens of seasonal waterfalls in the monsoon
- Short, nearly flat beginner trek that fits into one day from Pune or Mumbai
Risks
- The forest is dense and unmarked and often covered in fog in June-August; operators advise against going without a guide.
- Monsoon rock, mud and stream crossings are slippery; streams can rise fast after heavy rain. Never enter or stand under Kalu Waterfall.
- During heavy rain the Junnar Sub-Divisional Officer issues preventive orders for Malshej Ghat and nearby waterfalls (as on 8 July 2026): no entering fast-flowing water, swimming or risky selfies, and vehicles barred near waterfalls. Check local orders before going.
- Operators run different routes under the same name: some go only to the smaller Aadrai waterfall (about 8 km) and do not include the Kalu Waterfall viewpoint. Confirm the route when booking.
- Summer (March-May) is hot with little water and is not recommended by trek writers.

Questions
Is the Aadrai Jungle trek suitable for beginners?
Yes. Operators rate it easy (some say easy to moderate): it is mostly flat forest walking with a few gentle climbs and no technical sections. Good grip shoes matter more than fitness, because the monsoon trail is slippery.
How long is the Aadrai Jungle trek?
About 6 km each way, roughly 12 km round trip from Khireshwar, taking about 6 hours with breaks. Some operators run a shorter 8 km route to the Aadrai waterfall only, and one blog gives 14-16 km for a longer loop.
When is the best time to do the Aadrai Jungle trek?
June to October, when the forest is green and Kalu Waterfall is in full flow. July and August have the strongest waterfalls but the most slippery trail and fog; late September and October are easier. Summer is not recommended.
Can I do the Aadrai Jungle trek without a guide?
It is not advised. The forest is dense and unmarked and often fogged in, so operators recommend going with a guided group or a local guide from Khireshwar; one operator says a local guide is compulsory.
How do I reach Khireshwar, the base village?
Khireshwar is near Pimpalgaon Joga Dam in Junnar taluka, about 130 km from Pune via Narayangaon and Junnar and about 138 km from Mumbai via Malshej Ghat. By train, get off at Kalyan and take a state bus or local jeep to Khubi Phata and on to Khireshwar.
