Easy, as every source rates it: a well-used village path that locals walk daily. Expect about 600 m of steady climbing from Ambewadi on an open ridge, then a boulder-strewn stream bed (the Shivaji Ladder) near the top that becomes wet and slippery in the monsoon.

Good to know

Mobile network
Patchy on the ridge and in the forest below the Shivaji Ladder; generally available once on the Matheran plateau. Not confirmed by an operator.
Last ATM
Karjat; Matheran market has shops, but carry cash for the auto, the shared taxi and the entry charge
Nearest hospital
Karjat for first care; Panvel or Mumbai for serious cases
Water
Fill up at Ambewadi (the two village wells at the start of the trail). A small stream near the top of the Shivaji Ladder still flowed in December in one trip report, and there is a tea and snack stall at One Tree Hill Point. Start with 2 litres.

Highlights

  • Walk up into Asia's only automobile-free hill station the old way, on the path Ambewadi villagers use every day to reach work in Matheran
  • A long open ridge above the Morbe dam backwaters, with Irshalgad and Prabalgad on the skyline for most of the climb
  • The Shivaji Ladder: a boulder-filled stream bed through the last forest belt, a gushing waterfall route in the monsoon
  • One Tree Hill, a grassy knoll joined to Matheran by a narrow ridge, and nearby Big Chowk Point for sunset over the Sahyadri forts
  • Finish through the red-earth lanes and old bungalows of Matheran to Dasturi Naka, with a shared taxi down to Neral station

Risks

  • Shivaji Ladder: the trail disappears into a mass of boulders in a stream bed for the last ~500 m. In the monsoon you walk up through flowing water on wet rock; stay on the well-worn local path and do not attempt it in a cloudburst.
  • Monsoon: slippery red-earth ridge, mist and heavy rain. Raigad district has issued monsoon prohibitory orders at waterfalls and picnic spots in past years; we found no current order for this route, but check local news before a monsoon visit.
  • The ridge from Ambewadi is open and shadeless; from November to May start early, as trip reports describe walking in direct sun.
  • Do not climb the One Tree Hill knoll itself in wet weather: it is a steep grassy hump with drops on its sides.
  • Snakes are common in the Matheran forest (trip reports mention vipers and kraits); watch your step, especially at dusk.
  • Monkeys around the Matheran viewpoints snatch food and bottles; keep bags closed.

Questions

What is the base village for the One Tree Hill trek to Matheran?

Ambewadi, a village below the southern side of Matheran in the Karjat area of Raigad district. Mischief Treks and the freebird trip report both start here. Reach it from Karjat station by auto-rickshaw (about 45 minutes) or by ST bus to Borgaon Phata and a shared jeep onwards.

How long and how high is the One Tree Hill trek?

Operators give One Tree Hill a height of about 790-820 m (2,600-2,700 ft). A fast walker reaches the top from Ambewadi in about 2.5 hours, then it is about an hour's walk through Matheran to Dasturi Naka. Treks and Trails India quotes about 8 km for the whole walk; Mischief Treks quotes 6 km for its version, which returns to Ambewadi.

Is the One Tree Hill trek suitable for beginners?

Yes. All the operators and trip reports we used rate it easy, and locals use the path daily. The only tricky part is the Shivaji Ladder, a rocky stream bed near the top, which is wet and slippery in the monsoon.

What is the Shivaji Ladder?

A stretch of boulders and rock steps in a stream bed near the end of the forest, about 500 m below the top. The local story is that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj rode up this route on horseback. It is dry outside the monsoon and becomes a waterfall route in the rains.

When is the best time for the One Tree Hill trek?

June to October for green slopes, waterfalls and mist (Mischief Treks runs it then). Winter evenings are good for sunsets over Irshalgad and Prabalgad, and trip reports say the route can be walked all year if you start early in summer.

Do I have to pay to enter Matheran?

Yes, Matheran collects an entry charge from visitors at Dasturi Naka and the toy-train station; Treks and Trails India includes it in its price. We could not find the current amount on an official page, so check at the counter.
