Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Weak or no mobile signal around Dehri and on the trail, according to operators.
- Last ATM
- Murbad, and along the Bhiwandi–Murbad road
- Nearest hospital
- A government hospital about 4 km away (Indiahikes); Kalyan for serious cases
- Water
- Rock-cut cisterns on the fort; only some are drinkable (the tank to the left of the big cave). Carry at least 2 litres from Dehri, the last place to buy water.
Highlights
- Near-vertical rock-cut steps to a tiny summit with a small shrine
- A large rock-cut cave (locals call it Mandap) that can shelter about 50 people, with rock-cut cisterns
- Close views of the twin pinnacle of Machindragad, and of Siddhagad, Jivdhan and Ahupe Ghat
- Dense forest at the base on the edge of the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary
- Popular night trek from Mumbai to reach the top by sunrise
Risks
- The final 50–60 rock-cut steps to the summit are near vertical and exposed, and the first 10–12 are broken; use the hand-holds cut into the steps and go slowly, especially on the way down.
- A 65-degree rock patch just above the base Shiva temple needs a short scramble on fixed hooks.
- In the monsoon the rock steps and forest trail become very slippery; Outlook Traveller suggests stopping at the cave section in heavy rain. Check the forecast and avoid heavy-rain days.
- Thane district bans entry to forts and water bodies during heavy-rain warnings: the Collector issued such an order in July 2026, and a 2021 Thane order named Gorakhgad. Check for a current district order before a monsoon visit.
- Summer heat on the exposed upper section is intense; operators summit around dawn.

Questions
How difficult is the Gorakhgad trek?
It is short, about 3 km each way from Dehri, but operators rate it moderate to hard because of a 65-degree rock patch with fixed hooks and the near-vertical rock-cut steps to the summit. The descent on these steps is the trickiest part.
How do I reach Gorakhgad from Mumbai?
Take a train to Kalyan, a bus to Murbad, then an ST bus, tumtum or shared jeep to Dehri village, the base. By road it is about 90 km and roughly 3 hours from Mumbai.
Do I need a permit for Gorakhgad?
Indiahikes says no permission is needed to trek to Gorakhgad. We found no official fee; in the monsoon, check whether a Thane district order has closed forts that day.
What is the best time to trek Gorakhgad?
October to February gives cool weather and clear views. The monsoon is green but the rock steps get very slippery, and summer is hot, so start early and summit around dawn.
Can I combine Gorakhgad with Machindragad or Ahupe Ghat?
Yes. Indiahikes says both combinations are possible; Ahupe Ghat with Gorakhgad is a two-day trek with a night in Dehri or at the Gorakhnath temple at the base of the fort.
Is there water on the trek?
Dehri is the last place to buy food and water. There are rock-cut cisterns on the fort, but not all are drinkable; carry at least 2 litres.
