The first part crosses paddy fields, streams and forest on easy ground, but from the base of the ghat it is a steep, continuous climb of roughly 700 m with no flat stretches, and the return is the same steep descent; about 12 km in a long day.

Guided prices listed in 2026: Ramblers India ₹1,450 (AC bus from Mumbai, breakfast, veg lunch and an entry fee included; August 2026 departure); Treks and Trails India ₹1,499–1,599 for its Ahupe Plateau and Twin Valley Waterfall trek (AC bus from Mumbai, breakfast, lunch and guides). Self-guided is an estimate: local train to Kalyan, ST bus to Murbad and on to Khopivali and back, food, and a local guide from Khopivali for the confusing field and stream section.

Murbad for first care; Kalyan for serious cases (not confirmed by our sources)
Water
Streams and small waterfalls near the start and a small stream on the ghat climb (Indiahikes trip report); flow drops sharply after the monsoon, so carry 2–3 litres and treat stream water.

Highlights

  • An old ghat path climbing from the Konkan at Khopivali to Ahupe village on the edge of the Deccan plateau
  • Close views of the twin pinnacles of Gorakhgad and Machindragad all through the climb
  • A wide plateau with a sheer drop to the Konkan, often with clouds filling the valley in the early morning
  • Monsoon streams and waterfalls in the forest of the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary

Risks

  • From the base of the ghat the climb is steep and continuous, and the same slope must be descended; rocks and mud are very slippery in the monsoon.
  • Stream crossings near the start swell quickly in heavy rain; do not cross fast-flowing water.
  • The route through the paddy fields and across the streams is easy to lose; Indiahikes warns that one wrong turn after the stream crossing can derail the trek. Take a local guide or ask villagers in Khopivali.
  • On 6 July 2026 the Thane Collector banned entry to all tourist spots, forts and water bodies in the district under the Disaster Management Act 'until further notice' because of heavy-rain forecasts (Deccan Herald). Khopivali is in Thane district; check for a current district order before a monsoon visit.
  • In July 2026 the Bhimashankar sanctuary range closed Nagphani Point, Konkan Kada, Kondhavla waterfall and 'other dangerous tourist spots' until further orders (eSakal). Ahupe was not named, but the route runs through the sanctuary; check with the range office in the monsoon.
  • The trail lies in a wildlife sanctuary; stay in a group, stay on the path and watch for snakes.

Questions

How difficult is the Ahupe Ghat trek?

Moderate. Operators grade it medium to moderate: the start is an easy walk through fields, streams and forest, then a stiff, continuous climb up the ghat to Ahupe plateau. Ramblers India quotes about 4 hours up and 3 hours down, about 12 km in all.

Where does the Ahupe Ghat trek start?

At Khopivali (also spelt Khopiwali) village in Murbad taluka on the Konkan side. The path climbs to Ahupe village on the ghat top, past the base villages of Siddhagad (Narivali) and Gorakhgad (Dehri) on the road in.

What is the best time to do Ahupe Ghat?

Operators run it in the monsoon, June to September, when the streams and waterfalls are full. Monsoon trekking is also when Thane district may issue a ban on forts and water bodies, so check for a current order. Indiahikes' trip report describes a dry, sunny visit, when the streams were still running but the heat was strong.

Is Ahupe Ghat in a wildlife sanctuary and do I need a permit?

Treks and Trails India says the trail runs through the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary. We found no official permit or fee; one operator includes an unspecified entry fee in its price, so self-guided trekkers should check locally.

How do I reach Khopivali from Mumbai?

Take a train to Kalyan, then a car or ST bus to Murbad and on towards Mhase, Narivali and Dehri to Khopivali. Group treks leave Mumbai around 11 pm by bus and reach the village around 3:30 am.
