Highlights

  • A forest trail of pine, oak and rhododendron that Indiahikes calls a birder's trek, with many Himalayan birds in spring
  • Camping in the open Patangnia meadows, with two small temples and a wide view of Trishul, Nanda Devi, Changabang, Chaukhamba and Kedarnath peaks
  • Sunrise and sunset over the Ghansali valley from the ridge above camp
  • An offbeat weekend trek on the Tehri-Rudraprayag border that few tourists visit

Risks

  • Monsoon (July-August) brings heavy showers and landslides on the Tehri-Ghansali road; operators advise winter or summer instead.
  • Snow can cover the trail in winter and nights drop below freezing; carry warm layers and microspikes in snow.
  • The upper ridge and meadow sections are not well signposted; go with a local guide or a GPX track.

Questions

Is Chirbatiya a good trek for beginners?

Yes. Indiahikes, Trek The Himalayas and eUttaranchal all grade it easy (eUttaranchal says easy to moderate). Trekking is about 13 km over two days, with only short steep sections.

When is the best time for the Chirbatiya trek?

February to mid-March for rhododendrons and birds, and October-November for clear post-monsoon mountain views. Trek The Himalayas says it can be done year round, but operators advise avoiding the monsoon because of rain and landslides.

How do I reach Chirbatiya?

Drive from Dehradun via Chamba, New Tehri and Ghansali; operators quote about 6-7 hours. Chirbatiya sits on a pass on the Ghansali-Tilwara road, and the trek starts at the Ganesha gate in Chirbatiya market.

Is Indiahikes still running the Chirbatiya trek?

No. Indiahikes' page says it no longer runs this trek. Trek The Himalayas and eUttaranchal still list it as a 3-day weekend trek.

Do I need a permit for Chirbatiya?

eUttaranchal says no special permits are needed, and Trek The Himalayas includes any entry fees in its package. We could not confirm an official fee, so self-guided trekkers should check locally.
