Highlights
- Starts on the wide Shangarh meadows beside the three-tiered Shangchul Mahadev temple, ringed by deodar and pine forest.

- Nuhada waterfall, a three-step fall of about 12-15 m half an hour above the Tindadhar campsite.
- Pundrik Rishi Lake, about 400 m long and covered in floating grass, with a carved deodar-wood temple of Pundrik Rishi and a village school in a clearing near Sarahan; thousands from the valley gather here in October for Pundrik Rishi's jayanti.
- Birdlife of the Great Himalayan National Park eco-zone: Indiahikes' team recorded blue magpie, Western Tragopan, Himalayan griffon and yellow-billed chough.
Risks
- Pundrik Rishi Lake is sacred: entering the water, alcohol and non-vegetarian food are forbidden and, per Indiahikes, attract a fine of ₹5,000. Some temples in the valley do not admit visitors; ask before entering.
- July and August monsoon rain can wash out sections of the valley roads and make forest trails slippery; avoid these months.
- In January and February snow covers Shangarh and the trail, and internal roads can be blocked after heavy snowfall.
- Entry into the Great Himalayan National Park needs prior permission from park officials; fees are not published with a current date, so confirm at the GHNP range office at Ropa before starting.

Questions
What is the best time for the Sainj Valley trek?
Indiahikes says the trail can be walked all year but rates late February to April best; Vargis Khan names April to June for summer and January for snow; The Hosteller suggests April to June and September to November. Avoid the July-August monsoon.
Is the Sainj Valley trek suitable for beginners?
Yes. Indiahikes classes it as an easy weekend trek: about 6 km on day 1 and a gradual climb to Pundrik Rishi Lake on day 2, staying below about 2,100 m. The continuous ascents still need basic fitness.
Do I need a permit for the Sainj Valley trek?
The Great Himalayan National Park requires prior permission for entry, issued at the head office in Shamshi and the range offices including Ropa in the Sainj valley, and multi-day trekkers inside the park must engage certified guides and porters. The Shangarh-Pundrik route runs through eco-zone villages; ask at the Ropa range office whether a permit or fee applies to your route. No current official fee list is published.
How do I reach Shangarh?
Take an overnight Delhi-Manali or Chandigarh-Manali bus and get off at Aut before the tunnel. From Aut it is about 25 km and 2 hours by taxi to Shangarh via Sainj.
Can I swim in Pundrik Rishi Lake?
No. The lake is sacred to the valley; entering the water, drinking alcohol and eating non-vegetarian food there are forbidden and fined (₹5,000 per Indiahikes).
