Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Not confirmed. The trail starts at the edge of Dehradun city, so expect signal near Jhariwala; coverage higher up is unknown.
- Last ATM
- Dehradun (Garhi Cantt area)
- Nearest hospital
- Dehradun city hospitals, about 30 minutes by road from the trailhead
- Water
- The Nun river along the first part of the walk; carry enough water for the climb and treat any stream water.
Highlights
- Walking beside the Nun river through forest from Jhariwala, at the edge of Dehradun
- A steady climb past Halduwala, the Nunes meadow (about 1,200 m) and the Bakarna ridge (about 1,500 m)
- Views over the Doon Valley and the Mussoorie hills from Chhaskhet village at about 1,800 m
- Garhwali village life, terraced fields and home-cooked food in Chhaskhet, all within a day trip of Dehradun
Risks
- July-August monsoon rain makes the trail slippery, prone to landslides and leech-infested; Himalaya Shelter says the monsoon is not recommended.
- The trail is offbeat and not well marked, so a local guide is advised; emergency services are limited.
- December-February can bring cold and occasional snow higher up; the operator says winter is not for beginners or children.
- Two routes share the name: the Nun river climb from Jhariwala (this page) and the short Chhaskhet Nature Walk from Clouds End near Mussoorie. Confirm which one a booking covers.

Questions
Where does the Chhaskhet trek start?
At Jhariwala (also spelt Jariwala), a village on the Nun river about 6 km from Garhi Cantt in Dehradun. It is about 30 minutes from Dehradun by cab or taxi; Himalaya Shelter picks up from Prince Chowk.
How long and how hard is the Chhaskhet trek?
About 6 km one way and back by the same path. Incredible India says it takes about five hours and climbs from about 800 m to about 1,800 m; Himalaya Shelter quotes 4-5 hours up and about 3 hours down and rates it easy, though the climb is steep in places.
Is the Chhaskhet Nature Walk the same as the Nunes Bakarna Chhaskhet trek?
No. The nature walk is a short village and forest walk from the Mussoorie side near Clouds End, which operators list at roughly 3-8 km and 2-4 hours. The Nunes Bakarna Chhaskhet trek climbs from the Nun river at Jhariwala, near Dehradun, up to the same village.
When is the best time for the Chhaskhet trek?
Himalaya Shelter calls it an all-season trek but recommends March to June and September to November. July and August bring heavy rain, slippery trails and leeches.
