Know before you go

Good to know

Mobile network
Patchy; usable around Kakkabe and in open stretches near the top, weak in the forest.
Last ATM
Virajpet (Kakkabe has none reliably)
Nearest hospital
Government hospital, Virajpet (about 25 km)
Water
No dependable water on the trail; carry at least 2 litres from the homestay.

Highlights

  • Highest peak in Kodagu (Coorg) at 1,748 m
  • Trail climbs past Nalknad Palace, through coffee estates and shola forest to open grassland ridges
  • Wide views over the Western Ghats ridgelines from the summit
  • Forest Department path markers (orange ribbons) along the route

Risks

  • Leeches and slippery grass slopes, especially just after the monsoon
  • Thick cloud near the summit can hide the trail; a trekker went missing here in 2026, so stay on the marked path
  • Forest checkpost stops entry after 2:30 PM; starting late risks descending in the dark

Questions

Do I need to book the Tadiyandamol trek in advance?

Yes. The Karnataka Forest Department sells slots online at aranyavihaara.karnataka.gov.in (listed as Tadiyandmole Trek, Kodagu). Booking opens 30 days ahead and closes the day before; there is one 7:30–11:00 AM slot for 150 trekkers, up to 3 people per booking. Carry your original ID.

How long is the trek?

About 12 km round trip from Nalknad Palace, which is how most operators count it. The Forest Department measures only the controlled stretch from the Karadimotte forest gate: 3.5 km to the top, about 7 km in all.

Can I camp on top?

No. Night camping was stopped in December 2016 because of litter and disturbance to wildlife; it is a day hike only.

When is the best time to go?

September to February for clear weather. The booking calendar was closed from mid-May to the end of August in 2026.

How do I reach the start without a car?

Take an overnight KSRTC bus from Bengaluru to Virajpet, a Bhagamandala-bound bus to Kakkabe, then a shared auto (about ₹400) or jeep (about ₹800) to Nalknad Palace.
