Cost
Self-guided
₹300–1,500
With an operator
₹1,000–1,800
Per person, ex-Pune. We found no operator currently selling a dated Chandan Vandan departure, so the guided range is our estimate from what Pune clubs charge for comparable one-day Sahyadri fort treks with transport. TripXL puts a self-run day trip at about ₹800–1,500 including transport and snacks; ex-Satara by ST bus to Kikli it costs a few hundred rupees. No entry fee is mentioned by any source.

Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Not confirmed by our sources; the forts sit near the Pune–Satara highway and Satara city — check locally.
- Last ATM
- Bhuinj or Satara city (not confirmed — carry cash)
- Nearest hospital
- Satara city hospitals (about 25 km); Wai for first care
- Water
- Water tank at the start of the trail. On the forts the water is not potable (the old gazetteer and Wikipedia agree); Trekshitiz says drinking water is found on top only in the rains. Carry at least 2 litres each.
Highlights
- Two forts in one day: Vandan and Chandan stand on one ridge, split by a col barely half a mile across
- Vandan's gateways with a carved Ganesh image on the bastion and a Persian inscription over the second gate
- The old Chakreshwar Mahadev mandir on Chandan with its Shivalingas, the Panchvad group of five banyan trees and the stacked-stone pillars nearby
- Wide views over Kikli, Ibrahimpur and the Banawadi dam, with Kalyangad (Nandgiri), Vairatgad and Pandavgad on the horizon
- Shilahara-era forts (King Bhoj II, about 1191–92) later held by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj from 1673
Risks
- Monsoon (June–September): mud trails, the rock patch below Chandan and the broken stone steps on Vandan turn slippery; wear shoes with grip.
- Steep, crumbling steps and a rock-slide on Vandan's inner gateway section; keep away from the scarp edges on both forts.
- No reliable drinking water on top outside the rains and little shade on the open slopes; summer (March–May) is hot, so start early.
- Crowds on the Shravan festival days at the Mahadev mandir on Chandan.
- We found no current district or forest order on monsoon access; check locally before a rainy-season visit.

Questions
Can Chandan and Vandan be done in one day?
Yes. Wikipedia and Indiahikes both describe it as a one-day trek. From the col between the forts Vandan's gate is close by, and Indiahikes times Vandan to Chandan at about 45 minutes to an hour.
Where does the trek start?
Three villages are used: Belmachi (near Kikli), where a start-point board stands and a path climbs to the col; Ibrahimpur (Banawadi), which Wikipedia calls the easiest; and Kholvadi. Indiahikes walks from Rautwadi up to Vandan, then Chandan, and down to Ibrahimpur.
How high are the forts?
Most sources give about 3,800 ft (about 1,158 m). The Satara District Gazetteer says Vandan is the higher of the two at 3,851 ft and Chandan is slightly lower.
Is there drinking water on the forts?
Not reliably. The cisterns are not potable, and Trekshitiz says water is found on top only in the rains. Carry at least 2 litres each.
When is the best time to go?
TripXL recommends July to February: green in the monsoon, cooler and clearer in winter. Treks and Trails (Pune) suggests the Shravan month (about July), when villages hold a festival at the Mahadev mandir on Chandan. Avoid the summer heat.
