Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Not confirmed by our sources; expect patchy mobile signal on the ghat road and plateau.
- Last ATM
- Bhor town (not confirmed by our sources; carry cash for villagers' meals)
- Nearest hospital
- Bhor for first care; Pune for serious cases
- Water
- Operators say drinking water is available on top; carry 2-3 litres anyway and treat water from tanks or lakes.
Highlights
- Shri Raireshwar Mandir, the ancient stone Shiv temple where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, aged 16, took the oath of Hindavi Swarajya with his Mavala companions before the Shivling
- The 'Ladder of Heaven': a chain of short metal ladders up the cliff to the plateau
- A huge, inhabited plateau about 7-8 km long, carpeted with wildflowers after the monsoon
- Gomukh lake, Nakhinda (Aswal lake), Pandav Leni and the seven-coloured soil on the plateau
- Views of Rajgad, Torna, Rohida, Kenjalgad and Kamalgad and the Dhom backwaters
Risks
- The ladder section is steep and practically one-way; some ladders have no side railings, so go slowly and expect waits on crowded weekends.
- Monsoon (June-September) rain and cloud make the rock and ladders slippery, and the hairpin road up to the base is often in poor shape until repaired after the monsoon.
- Pune district has issued monsoon prohibitory orders in past years (for example July 2024) covering waterfalls and fort areas in Bhor and Velha tehsils; check for a current order before going.
- There are no clean toilets on the trek, and food should be carried or bought from villagers on the plateau.

Questions
Why is Raireshwar important?
The Shri Raireshwar Mandir on the plateau is dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva. Here Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, at about 16, took the oath to found Hindavi Swarajya with his Mavala companions in 1645, offering blood from his finger on the Shivling. The stone temple is old and was rebuilt in the 18th century; a large painting of Shivaji Maharaj and his companions hangs inside.
How long does the Raireshwar trek take?
The climb from the parking near the base takes about 30 minutes to an hour; operators allow about an hour up, a few hours on the plateau and an hour down. Treks and Trails India puts the distance from Korle to the top at about 6 km.
What is the height of Raireshwar?
Treks and Trails India and Wikipedia give about 1,373 m (4,505 ft). Other operators quote 4,000-4,600 ft.
How do I reach Raireshwar from Pune?
Raireshwar is about 82-84 km from Pune in Bhor taluka, around 2.5-3 hours by road. The shortest road goes through Bhor towards Varandha Ghat and then up a steep road with many hairpins; buses usually take the Wai side because the Bhor ghat road is narrow.
When is the best time to visit Raireshwar?
June to February. September and the weeks after the monsoon bring wildflowers across the plateau; the monsoon gives cloud views but slippery ladders.
Are the ladders safe for beginners?
Operators rate the trek easy and run it for beginners. The ladders are short but steep, and some lack railings, so climb slowly with three points of contact, especially in rain.
