Highlights

  • A dramatic crossover from the green, forested Kullu valley into the stark, barren Lahaul side in a single day
  • Campsites at the Chika and Balu ka Ghera meadows among peaks and waterfalls
  • Shea Goru camp below Indrasan, and the descent to Chatru on the Chandra river
  • Optional drive to Chandratal lake from Chatru when the road is open

Risks

  • Acute mountain sickness after Balu ka Ghera; the pass day climbs to 4,270 m and takes about 10 hours
  • Icy, fast stream crossings, snow patches and strong winds at the pass
  • Landslides and washed-out trails in mid-July to August monsoon; the Kullu Forest Division suspended trekking here in September 2025 after floods
  • No phone network beyond Jobra, so carry a GPS track or go with a guide

Questions

Is Chandratal part of the Hampta Pass trek?

No, it is an optional add-on. The trek ends at Chatru in Lahaul; from there operators drive to Chandratal lake (about 4,300 m) only if the road and weather allow, then return to Manali via the Atal Tunnel/Rohtang side. The lake has a separate entry fee.

When is the best time to do Hampta Pass?

Mid-June to early October. June to early July has snow patches and cold river crossings, mid-July to August brings landslide risk, and September to early October has the clearest weather. The pass is snowbound and closed from about November to May.

Do I need a permit for Hampta Pass?

Yes. Sources say independent trekkers must get a forest permit from the Forest Office in Manali; operators include it in their package. We could not find an official current fee schedule, so check the amount at the Manali forest office. Vehicles driving up the Hamta road may also need a separate Kullu administration pass.

How long and how high is the trek?

About 26–28 km of walking over 5 days (4 trekking days plus the drive back), from Jobra to Chatru, with a high point of about 4,270 m at the pass.

Is there mobile network on the trail?

Not after Jobra. Do not rely on phone network for navigation or emergencies.
