Good to know

Mobile network
Not confirmed for the forest trail; expect signal in Sonprayag and Triyuginarayan village, with patchy coverage in between.
Last ATM
Not confirmed; Guptkashi is the most reliable place to find ATMs before Sonprayag. Carry cash for guest houses, jeeps and offerings.
Nearest hospital
Not confirmed; there are basic health posts on the Kedarnath route around Sonprayag and Guptkashi in the yatra season, and Rudraprayag district hospital for serious cases.
Water
Carry water from Sonprayag; the Saraswati Ganga stream rising in the temple courtyard feeds the kunds at Triyuginarayan, and tea stalls and dhabas are in the village.

Highlights

  • Darshan at Triyuginarayan, the sacred place of the vivah of Bhagwan Shiva and Mata Parvati, where Bhagwan Vishnu (Narayan) is enshrined with Mata Lakshmi and Mata Saraswati
  • The akhand dhuni before the temple, the sacred fire that has burned since the divine vivah; devotees offer samidha (wood) and carry its vibhuti home as prasad
  • The Brahma Shila in front of the temple, marking the spot of the vivah, where Bhagwan Brahma served as the priest
  • Rudra Kund, Vishnu Kund, Brahma Kund and Saraswati Kund, fed by the Saraswati Ganga stream that rises in the temple courtyard
  • A quiet forest walk on the old Ghuttu–Kedarnath bridle path above the Mandakini–Son Ganga confluence at Sonprayag
  • A stone temple in the same style as Shri Kedarnath, in a terraced village with views over the Kedar valley

Risks

  • July–August monsoon rain makes the trail slippery and brings landslides on the Rishikesh–Sonprayag highway; Himalaya Shelter advises avoiding the monsoon, though no source says the route is closed.
  • December to February brings snow and sub-zero nights; Himalaya Shelter says elderly people and children should avoid winter, and others need proper winter gear.
  • Sonprayag is the road-head for the Kedarnath yatra, so in the yatra season traffic, parking and rooms there can be very crowded; book a stay in advance.
  • Distances quoted for the walk vary (about 5 km in most sources, about 10 km in one operator line), so allow extra time and ask locals for the forest path at Sonprayag.

Questions

How long is the walk from Sonprayag to Triyuginarayan?

About 5 km one way on the old Ghuttu–Kedarnath bridle path through thick forest, according to Wikipedia, Onmanorama and Yatradham. Himalaya Shelter says most people cover it in about 2 hours. The motorable road is longer, about 12 km.

Can I drive to Triyuginarayan instead of walking?

Yes. A motorable road of about 12 km runs from Sonprayag to the temple, so many pilgrims come by jeep. The forest footpath is for those who want to walk; you can take a jeep back down.

What is the akhand dhuni at Triyuginarayan?

It is the sacred fire in the havan kund before the temple, burning since the vivah of Bhagwan Shiva and Mata Parvati; for this the temple is also called the Akhand Dhuni temple. Devotees offer wood to it and take its vibhuti as prasad, and the Brahma Shila in front of the temple marks the spot of the vivah.

What is the best time to visit?

Himalaya Shelter names April to June (cool weather, rhododendron bloom) and September to November (clear views, fewer crowds) as the best months. The temple can be visited in winter too, but December to February brings snow and sub-zero nights, and the monsoon (July–August) makes the trail slippery.

Can I walk on from Triyuginarayan to Kedarnath?

Wikipedia and Onmanorama give the trekking distance between Kedarnath and Triyuginarayan as about 25 km, via Gaurikund, which is about 5 km from Triyuginarayan. Most pilgrims return to Sonprayag and take the standard Gaurikund–Kedarnath path.

Can couples get married at Triyuginarayan?

Yes. Himalaya Shelter notes that many couples now hold their wedding at Triyuginarayan and take the saat phere around the akhand dhuni. Arrangements are made with the temple priests locally.
