Highlights

  • Two high meadows in the Har Ki Dun valley: Batgoera Bugyal above 3,000 m and the Rashi meadow at about 3,600 m
  • A 360° view of hanging glaciers and sharp peaks from Rashi Top
  • Forest that changes from oak, deodar and pine to spruce, fir and birch, with Himalayan monals often seen
  • Village start at Dharkot through rajma, wheat and mandua fields and apple orchards inside Govind National Park

Risks

  • This route is little documented: only one operator publishes it, and distances, altitudes and coordinates on this page are approximate.
  • The final stretch to Rashi Top is steep and windy; start early and be back at Batgoera by early afternoon, as the weather changes after midday.
  • Do not camp at Rashi: the operator advises against it because of wind and altitude, and returns to Batgoera the same day.
  • Monsoon rain (July-August) makes the forest trail slippery and stream crossings higher; winter snow can block the upper meadows.

Questions

Where does the Rashi Top and Batgoera Bugyal trek start?

From Dharkot village in the Har Ki Dun valley, about an hour's jeep drive from Sankri through Govind National Park via Taluka and Datmir. Sankri is about 7 hours by road from Dehradun.

How difficult is the trek?

The operator that runs it rates it easy. The walk to Batgoera Bugyal is about 4 km on a wide forest trail (about 3 hours). The day hike to Rashi Top is steeper, about 600 m of climbing that takes 3-4 hours up.

When is the best time to go?

The operator lists April and November as the best time, and runs it in summer and autumn. Expect rain in July-August and snow on the upper meadows in winter.
