Questions
When is the best time for the Vishkhopri trek?
Bikat Adventures and Himalayan Hikers both give May, June, September and October. July-August is monsoon with landslide risk, and December to March the valley is under snow.
How do I reach the start of the Vishkhopri trek?
Travel to Dehradun, then drive about 210 km (7-8 hours) to Sankri. Next morning a jeep covers the 19 km to Jakhol, the last village of the Supin valley, where the walk to Liwari begins.
Is Vishkhopri suitable for beginners?
Operators say it suits beginners and experienced trekkers, but Bikat asks for one earlier easy trek of 2-3 days up to about 2,500 m. Walking days are 8-10 km and parts of the path are landslide-damaged, so good fitness is needed.
How long and how high is the Vishkhopri trek?
About 54 km over 8 days from Sankri (Bikat) or 46 km over 9 days with a rest day at Vishkhopri (Himalayan Hikers). The highest camp, Vishkhopri, is at about 3,600 m.
Do I need a permit?
Bikat includes forest permits and camping charges, if any, in its package. We could not find an official fee, so self-guided trekkers should check at the forest office in Sankri before setting out.
