Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Jio and BSNL are reported to work fairly reliably on the route, with patchy stretches.
- Last ATM
- Munsiyari town; carry enough cash for the camp, guide and forest fee.
- Nearest hospital
- Community Health Centre, Munsiyari; district hospital at Pithoragarh for serious cases
- Water
- No food or reliable water on the trail; carry water from Munsiyari. The Bhujani camps provide meals and water for overnight guests. Treat any stream water.
Highlights
- Close views of the Panchachuli massif, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, Rajrambha and Hardeol from the 3,500 m top
- Sunset and sunrise over Panchachuli from the meadow, with an overnight tent stay at Bhujani
- Oak and rhododendron forest that flames red in spring, opening onto the Khaliya bugyal
- Zero Point about 1 km beyond the top for a full 360° view, and snow slopes used for skiing in winter
Risks
- July to September monsoon rain makes the trail slippery and brings landslide risk on the Munsiyari roads; operators advise against trekking then.
- December to March the meadow is under snow and operators say it is only for experienced winter trekkers with proper gear.
- The road from Kathgodam is 10-12 hours of mountain driving each way and can be cut by landslides.
- Weather turns fast on the open meadow; start early (6-9 am) and be off the top before afternoon cloud.

Questions
Can Khaliya Top be done in a day?
Yes. From Khaliya Dwar (Balati Bend), 7-9 km from Munsiyari, it is about 6 km and roughly 3 hours up and 12 km round trip, so fit trekkers do it in a day. Many prefer to camp a night at Bhujani base camp, 3 km up, to see sunset and sunrise over Panchachuli.
Is Khaliya Top suitable for beginners?
Yes. Operators grade it easy and describe it as good for beginners and families with older children, but there are steep uphill sections, so basic fitness and good footwear are needed.
What is the best time for Khaliya Top?
March to June (rhododendrons in spring) and September to November (clearest views, especially October). Avoid the July-September monsoon. December to March brings snow, which suits experienced winter trekkers with gear.
Is there an entry fee or permit for Khaliya Top?
Trekkers report a forest entry fee of about ₹50 per person at the start, plus parking charges. We could not confirm the current official fee or any permit rule for foreigners, so check at the forest checkpost or in Munsiyari.
What is Zero Point at Khaliya?
Zero Point is a higher spot about 1 km beyond Khaliya Top with a 360° mountain view. Its height is quoted between about 3,750 m and 4,000 m.
