Cost
Self-guided
₹200–800
With an operator
₹1,000–2,000
Per person, ex-Bengaluru, day trip. Estimates only: we found no operator publishing a price for this hike, and Indiahikes documents it as a do-it-yourself trek. Self-guided covers a KSRTC bus or train to Ramanagara and back, an auto-rickshaw to Hunasanahalli (under ₹100 each way, Indiahikes) and food in Ramanagara. The guided figure assumes a hired car from Bengaluru with a local helper, shared by a small group.

Good to know
- Mobile network
- Good mobile network all along the trek, as it is close to Ramanagara town (Indiahikes).
- Last ATM
- Ramanagara town (about 8 km)
- Nearest hospital
- Rotary BGS Global Hospital and Ramakrishna Hospital, Ramanagara, about 8 km from Hunasanahalli
- Water
- No water sources on the hike; carry at least 2 litres per person.
Highlights
- 360-degree view from the 916 m summit over the granite hillocks around Ramanagara and down onto the town
- Rock-cut steps from the lake to the Muthurayaswamy temple on the lower slope
- A hidden seasonal waterfall on the hillside that flows during and just after the monsoon
- A lake with a check dam and a small overflow fall at the base, good for a rest after the climb
- Quiet alternative to the neighbouring Handi Gundi Betta
Risks
- Steep bare granite (around 60 degrees in places) above the temple; it is slippery in rain, and Indiahikes advises against climbing in the monsoon. Wear shoes with good grip.
- No defined trail above the temple: keep to the right side of the hill, as the left is thick with vegetation; thorny shrubs line the way.
- The way down to the seasonal waterfall crosses steep, slippery sections.
- In the monsoon the lake can overflow and flood the approach road; Indiahikes suggests walking through the mango orchard on the left to reach the base.
- Little shade and strong sun in March–May; start early and carry water, as there is none on the hill.
- Ramanagara's rocky hills are leopard country. In May 2026 Karnataka's Chief Wildlife Warden suspended trekking paths in areas with leopards, tigers, elephants or bears until each route is certified; Muthurayaswamy Betta is not on the Aranya Vihaara portal and Indiahikes says no permission is needed, but check locally before you go.

Questions
Do I need a permit for Muthurayaswamy Betta?
Indiahikes says no permission is needed for the trek, and it is not listed on the Karnataka Forest Department's Aranya Vihaara booking portal. After the state's May 2026 suspension of trekking in wildlife areas, ask locally in Hunasanahalli before you climb.
How long is the Muthurayaswamy Betta trek and how hard is it?
About 2.3 km there and back with roughly 230 m of climb: about 10 minutes on rock-cut steps to the temple, then about 40 minutes straight up the rock to the summit. It is short enough for fit beginners, but some stretches are steep granite.
When is the best time to do Muthurayaswamy Betta?
Indiahikes says the hill can be climbed all year, but the best time is just after the monsoon, when the lake at the base is full and the seasonal waterfall flows. Avoid climbing in the rains, when the rock is slippery.
How do I reach Muthurayaswamy Betta from Bengaluru?
Take a bus or train to Ramanagara (most Bengaluru–Mysuru trains stop there), then an auto-rickshaw to Hunasanahalli Gram Panchayat, about 8 km. The trek starts at the end of Siddlukallu Kere road, beside the lake.
Is there water or food on the trail?
No. There are no water sources on the hike, so carry at least 2 litres. Eat in Ramanagara before and after the climb.
