A half-day walk of about 2.5 km each way on a well-marked path: paddy-field bunds, then a stone-paved forest path and granite steps through the fort gateways. Only the last climb to the hilltop and an optional rock scramble are steep, and the stone steps get slippery in the monsoon.

Cost
Self-guided
₹2,000–3,500
With an operator
₹3,500–5,000
Per person, ex-Bengaluru. No operator sells a Kavaledurga-only guided trek; it is added to weekend Kodachadri packages, e.g. a Tour Travel World listing from ₹3,500 per person for 2 days/1 night with transport from Bengaluru (date of price not stated). The upper figure is our allowance for other weekend Malnad packages and is not a published price. Self-guided is an estimate: overnight KSRTC bus Bengaluru–Thirthahalli both ways, an auto-rickshaw from Thirthahalli to the fort base and back, the entry ticket at the checkpost, and meals.

Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Not confirmed by our sources; expect patchy signal on the forested hill and check at the base.
- Last ATM
- Thirthahalli town, about 18 km away
- Nearest hospital
- Thirthahalli for first care; Shivamogga (about 75–80 km) for serious cases
- Water
- Nothing is available on the fort; carry 1–2 litres per person. The old stepped tanks (kalyanis) and ponds inside the fort are not drinking-water sources.
Highlights
- Three rounds of granite fort walls and stone gateways of the Keladi Nayakas' last capital, Bhuvanagiri
- The Shikhareshwara and Kashi Vishwanath temple, with carved walls, and the small Lakshminarayana shrine perched on a boulder
- Clear stepped tanks (kalyanis) and ponds that still hold water inside the fort
- Views over forested Western Ghats ridges and the Varahi backwaters from the upper fort
- Start along paddy fields that turn bright green and misty in the monsoon
Risks
- The stone-paved steps and granite slabs become slippery in the July–September monsoon; wear shoes with good grip and descend carefully.
- March to June is hot and humid, often above 35 °C; start early and carry enough water.
- Entry hours differ by source: Indiahikes (Sept 2026) gives 6 am–2 pm at the checkpost, Karnataka Tourism says entry closes by 5 pm. Arrive early.
- A 2024 trip report says entry to the topmost part of the fort was restricted that August; check at the checkpost how far you may go.
- Drones and videography equipment are prohibited and bags are checked; plastic and packed food are not allowed inside the fort.
- Karnataka's Chief Wildlife Warden suspended trekking paths in leopard, tiger, elephant and bear areas on 11 May 2026 until each is certified. Kavaledurga is a protected fort with a ticketed checkpost, not a forest-portal trek, but confirm locally that it is open.

Questions
How long does the Kavaledurga trek take?
About 3–4 hours in all, according to Indiahikes and trip reports: roughly an hour up, time to explore the gateways, temples and tanks, and an hour down. Karnataka Tourism says exploring takes two to three hours for fit visitors.
Is Kavaledurga suitable for beginners and families?
Yes. Indiahikes rates it easy: a well-marked, gradual climb on a stone-paved path and granite steps. No guide is needed. Take extra care on the wet steps in the rainy season.
Is there an entry fee or permit for Kavaledurga Fort?
No forest permit is needed. You buy an entry ticket at the checkpost at the base; Indiahikes reported ₹50 per person in 2026 (a 2022 trip report mentioned ₹25). We could not confirm the fee from an official notice, so check at the checkpost.
How do I reach Kavaledurga from Bengaluru?
Take an overnight KSRTC bus from Bengaluru to Thirthahalli (7–8 hours), then an auto-rickshaw for about 18 km to the fort base. By car it is about 360–370 km via Tumakuru, Tiptur and Shivamogga. Parking is available at the base.
What is the best time to visit Kavaledurga?
October to February, when it is cool and clear. The July–September monsoon is very green and misty but slippery; March to June is hot.
