Cost
Self-guided
₹3,500–8,000
With an operator
₹51,500–54,075
Per person, ex-New Jalpaiguri. Only one guided price was published: Himalaya Shelter lists its 4-day Barsey Rhododendron Trek at ₹51,500 + 5% GST, a premium private-trip price; no second operator publishes an INR price, so treat the guided range as unconfirmed and ask local Okhrey/Hilley homestays for a quote. Self-guided is an estimate: shared jeeps NJP-Jorethang-Hilley or a car from Okhrey (about ₹700 to Hilley), a homestay night, food and lodging at Guras Kunj (about ₹1,000 a head in 2019) and the sanctuary entry fee.

Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Patchy: internet is unreliable and power cuts happen around Okhrey and Hilley; carry a power bank and do not count on signal at Varsey.
- Last ATM
- Jorethang is the last sure ATM on the approach; carry cash for homestays, the hut and the entry fee.
- Nearest hospital
- Health sub-centres in nearby villages for first aid; hospitals at Jorethang and Gyalshing; Siliguri for serious cases.
- Water
- No reliable streams on the short trail; carry water from Hilley. Guras Kunj has piped water, which can freeze in winter. Boil or treat it.
Highlights
- A gravel trail through tunnels of red, pink and white rhododendron in full bloom from late March to May
- A night at Guras Kunj, the sanctuary's hilltop trekkers' hut, with Kanchenjunga views on clear mornings
- A 104 sq km sanctuary on the Singalila Range with magnolia, oak and pine forest and Himalayan birds
- One of the easiest overnight Himalayan walks in Sikkim, suitable for families and first-timers
Risks
- June to September brings heavy rain and leeches; the trail turns slippery and one source advises avoiding July-September.
- December to February are snowy and below freezing at Varsey; water pipes freeze and the Hilley road can be hard to drive after snowfall.
- Bloom timing varies year to year (a big 'mega bloom' comes only every few years); early-season visitors can find mostly closed buds.
- Rooms at Guras Kunj are few and sell out in bloom season; book ahead or plan a day walk from Hilley or Okhrey.
- Shared jeeps to Hilley are infrequent; book the return vehicle in advance.

Questions
How long is the Hilley to Varsey trek?
About 4 km each way on a laid gravel path (some sources say up to 5 km). Most people take 1.5 to 3 hours to walk up, and the round trip with time at the top is about 4 hours, so it can be done as a day walk or with a night at Varsey.
When do the rhododendrons bloom at Varsey?
From March to May, with the peak usually from late March to early May. October and November give clear Kanchenjunga views but no flowers; December to February are snowy.
Where can I stay at Varsey?
The Guras Kunj trekkers' hut inside the sanctuary has dormitory beds and a few rooms with meals, and there is a camping ground beside it. Hilley and Okhrey have homestays if the hut is full.
Do I need a permit for Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary?
Yes. An entry permit is issued at the forest check post at Hilley, on a per-head, per-day basis. Published fees differ (₹25 to ₹55, plus a camera fee), so check the current fee at the check post. Foreign nationals also need a Sikkim Inner Line / Restricted Area Permit.
How do I reach Hilley?
Take a train to New Jalpaiguri or fly to Bagdogra, then go by road via Jorethang (about 140 km in all, roughly 5-6 hours). Okhrey is 20-30 minutes below Hilley by car.
