₹8,000–15,000

Self-guided: Indiahikes says about ₹3,000 covers bus fares (₹250 each way), the Nainghar homestay and food from Manali; the upper end allows for tent and stove hire.

Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Indiahikes reports no phone network beyond the tea stop before Nainghar, except BSNL, which works in Nainghar village. No signal on the trail.
- Last ATM
- Not stated by our sources; carry enough cash from Manali.
- Nearest hospital
- Community Health Centre, Udaipur (Lahaul) for first care; Manali for better facilities. Not confirmed by a trek source.
- Water
- Plenty of side streams on the walk to Aaliyas and on the return. On the lake day there is only one fresh water source, just after the first climb. Stream water at Aaliyas carries silt; strain and treat it.
Highlights
- Neelkanth Mahadev Lake, a turquoise high-altitude lake below the sharp, fin-shaped Neelkanth Peak, revered as an abode of Bhagwan Shiva; local tradition holds that Mahadev did tapasya here, and a small shrine stands beside the lake
- Trishuls and stone cairns placed by pilgrims mark the last 2 km to the lake
- Views of the Neelkanth Glacier and of Nainghar Choti, Siri Parbat, Shilling, Saltu Da Par and Gangstang peaks
- Nainghar, a small Lahauli village at about 3,350 m on the Thirot Nala, and a silt delta that turns golden in September
Risks
- At least five glacial stream crossings, the Gadbad Nala and Thirot Nala the hardest. Water rises in the afternoon; Indiahikes advises crossing before about noon.
- The trail is faint in boulder fields; Indiahikes advises following cairns and a GPX track, or hiring a local guide from Nainghar.
- Altitude: the trek starts at about 3,350 m and camps at about 4,040 m. Doing the lake and the return to Nainghar in one day (about 26 km) raises the risk of altitude sickness and exhaustion.
- Local custom: Indiahikes reports that the people of the area do not permit women to go to the lake, in keeping with their religious tradition. Respect it and ask in Nainghar before setting out.
- Since June 2026 the Lahaul-Spiti DDMA requires all trekkers to register their route and team with an authorised officer before starting and to check out on return; solo trekking is discouraged.
- Heavy rain can make the route impassable: Indiahikes' July 2022 team turned back because of it. Remote valley with no phone signal beyond Nainghar.

Questions
Is this the same as the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple near Rishikesh?
No. That temple is about 32 km from Rishikesh in Uttarakhand. This trek goes to Neelkanth Mahadev Lake in the Lahaul area of Lahaul and Spiti district, Himachal Pradesh, starting from Nainghar village.
When is the best time for the Neelkanth Mahadev Lake trek?
Indiahikes says September to October is best, with late May to June as an alternative. Avoid the monsoon (July-August): its July 2022 team had to turn back in heavy rain. Trekking in the district is banned in winter.
How difficult is the trek?
Moderate. It covers about 26 km in three walking days, with boulder sections, a steep climb to the lake at about 4,460 m and at least five icy stream crossings. The longer days make it a notch harder than easy treks like Kedarkantha.
Do I need a permit?
Indiahikes reported no permit for the lake itself. Since June 2026, however, the Lahaul-Spiti DDMA requires every trekker to register the route and team with an authorised officer before starting and to check out on return. We found no official fee; check locally in Udaipur or Keylong.
Can women visit Neelkanth Mahadev Lake?
Indiahikes reports that local people do not permit women to approach the lake, in keeping with their religious tradition. Trekkers are asked to respect the community's faith; ask in Nainghar before planning.
Where do I stay?
Indiahikes recommends the Neelkanth Homestay in Nainghar, which also serves breakfast and dinner; you can pitch a tent in its garden. On the trail you camp at Aaliyas, so carry a tent, stove and food.
