Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Not confirmed by our sources; expect little or no mobile signal beyond Gogina and check locally.
- Last ATM
- Bageshwar (carry cash; we could not confirm an ATM nearer Gogina)
- Nearest hospital
- Bageshwar district hospital for serious care; Haldwani for major emergencies
- Water
- Streams along the route; Namik village has a small stream and the Ramganga is crossed between Gogina and Namik. Boil or treat all water.
Highlights
- The snout of Namik Glacier, about 3 km long and the source of the Eastern Ramganga river
- Walking through Kimu and Namik, remote Kumaoni villages of stone houses on the old route to the glacier
- Alpine meadows around Thal Tok with views of the Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot peaks
- One of the least-crowded glacier treks in Kumaon, far from the busy Pindari and Milam routes
Risks
- Monsoon (July-August) rain makes the trail slippery and swells the streams; operators advise against trekking then.
- From November to April the upper route is under snow and operators describe it as not ideal.
- Day altitudes at Thal Tok and Nanda Kund differ widely between operators; plan acclimatisation with a local guide.
- Very remote: no confirmed mobile signal and the nearest hospital is in Bageshwar, a long drive from Gogina.

May-June and September-October. Operators advise avoiding the July-August monsoon and say November to April is not ideal because of snow.
