Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Limited; operators report patchy signal for most networks on the trail. Carry a power bank, as there is nowhere to charge.
- Last ATM
- Karjat or Neral; carry cash for village snacks and the shared taxi
- Nearest hospital
- Karjat and Neral for first care; Panvel or Mumbai for serious cases
- Water
- Refill at the village well in Sagachiwadi on the way up; there is no water on the plateau. Start with 2-3 litres.
Highlights
- A long grassland plateau on the edge of Matheran with wide views over Bhivpuri, Karjat and the Dhom (Bhivpuri) dam lake
- Garbett Point, the high tip of the spur, looking back along the whole plateau towards the Sahyadri ranges
- Two seasons, two treks: a misty monsoon day walk past streams and waterfalls, or a night climb for sunrise on the open plateau from October to May
- Reached by local train: start at Bhivpuri Road and finish at Dasturi Naka, Matheran, with a shared taxi down to Neral station
Risks
- Steep and exposed stretches on the climb to the plateau; one operator warns that the short-cut ridge from Garbett Point to Dasturi Naka has a drop of around 80 feet, and recommends the longer route through the village inside Matheran.
- Monsoon: slippery stream crossings near Diksal waterfall, heavy rain, high wind and low visibility on the plateau. Raigad district has issued monsoon prohibitory orders at waterfalls and picnic spots in past years (for example Devkund and Tamhini in 2025); we found no 2026 order covering this route, but check local news before a monsoon visit.
- Almost no tree cover: daytime walks in October-May are hot (operators quote around 39 °C in summer), which is why winter and summer batches are run at night. Carry a headlamp and spare batteries.
- No food, toilets or water on the plateau; the last refill is the well at Sagachiwadi.
- Monkeys at Dasturi Naka snatch food and water bottles; keep bags closed.

Questions
Where is Garbett Plateau and how do I reach the start?
It is on the edge of Matheran, above Bhivpuri Road, in the Karjat area of Raigad district. Take a CSMT-Karjat or Khopoli slow local to Bhivpuri Road (about 2 hr 10 min from CSMT). The trek ends at Dasturi Naka in Matheran, and a shared taxi takes you down to Neral station.
How high is Garbett Point?
About 700 m. Treks and Trails India gives about 670 m (2,200 ft) for Garbett Point and about 700 m for Dasturi Naka; elevation data at the point's location gives about 700 m. Some listings quote 800 m (2,625 ft), which is the usual height given for Matheran town.
How long and how difficult is the Garbett trek?
Operators rate it easy to medium. Treks and Trails India describes the Bhivpuri-Garbett Point-Dasturi Naka route as about 10.5 km with about 700 m of climbing and about 6 hours of walking (8 hours with a sunrise break). Nothing is technical, but some stretches are steep and exposed.
When is the best time for the Garbett Plateau trek?
The monsoon and just after (June to October) for green slopes, mist and waterfalls; operators run it as a day trek then. From October to May the trail is hot and shadeless in the day, so it is done as a night trek for sunrise on the plateau.
Is drinking water or food available on the trek?
Only at the start and in Sagachiwadi village, where you can refill from the village well. There is no water, food or toilet on the plateau, so carry 2-3 litres and snacks.
