Short days, but the climb from Geewani to Dhar Khadak runs along a narrow, steep mountain edge, and the 5-6 km climb to Chenap Top gains about 950 m on slopes near 30 degrees with no water on the way; the 10-11 km descent back to Thaing is hard on the knees.

Cost

Self-guided

₹8,000–15,000

With an operator

₹13,500–50,600

Per person, ex-Joshimath for self-guided; guided packages start further away. Guided prices published October 2026: eUttaranchal lists ₹13,500 for a 6-day package ex-Haridwar (the page does not say whether this is per person); Himalaya Shelter lists ₹48,000 per person + 5% GST and ₹180 trek insurance for 8 days ex-Dehradun. Self-guided is an estimate: shared jeep or bus to Joshimath, a jeep to the Thaing road head, a local guide and porter from Thaing for 4-5 days, tent and stove hire, and food.

Water
A water pipe on the walk to Thaing, taps in Geewani village, a source about 500 m from the Dhar Khadak campsite and small streams at Chenap Bugyal. There is no water on the climb from Dhar Khadak to Chenap Top, so fill all bottles before it. Boil or treat all water.

Highlights

  • Camping on Chenap Bugyal among wildflowers and grass that grow 3-4 ft tall, often compared to the Valley of Flowers (where camping is not allowed)
  • Hathi Parbat, Nanda Devi, Trishul I and Nanda Ghunti in one frame from the bugyal, with sunrise lighting Nanda Devi
  • A quiet route through Thaing and Geewani villages, with fields of ramdana, rajma and apple and apricot orchards
  • Start near Vishnuprayag, the sacred confluence of the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga on the way to Shri Badrinath Dham
  • Optional extra day to Sona Shikhar via Fulna and Maskyani bugyals for Brahma Kamal

Risks

  • The trail from Geewani to Dhar Khadak and the final climb to Chenap Top are narrow and steep with sharp drops on both sides; mud and leaves make them slippery after rain.
  • Monsoon (mid-July to August) brings landslides and muddy trails; Himalaya Shelter calls it very risky and the narrow road from Marwari Bridge to the road head is prone to slides.
  • Winter brings heavy snowfall; Trek The Himalayas says the route becomes inaccessible and Himalaya Shelter does not recommend it. No formal closure order was found.
  • Camping at about 3,700 m after a 950 m climb from Dhar Khadak can bring on altitude sickness; descend if symptoms worsen.

Questions

When is the best time for the Chenap Valley trek?

May-June and September-October. Trek The Himalayas recommends April to June and September to October, Tour My India mid-May to mid-October. The flowers peak in the monsoon, but mid-July to August brings landslides and muddy trails, and winter brings heavy snow.

How difficult is the Chenap Bugyal trek?

Moderate. Indiahikes and Trek The Himalayas grade it moderate with a few tricky sections: the narrow, steep edge between Geewani and Dhar Khadak, and the steep, near-30-degree climb to Chenap Top. You gain about 1,800 m from Joshimath, so good cardio fitness is needed.

How do I reach the start of the trek?

Reach Joshimath (about 250 km and 9-10 hours by road from Rishikesh). From Joshimath take a local vehicle about 12 km across Marwari Bridge near Vishnuprayag to the road head below Thaing, then walk 3-4 km up to Thaing village.

Is Chenap Valley like the Valley of Flowers?

It is often called a mini Valley of Flowers for its flower-filled meadows, though it is much smaller. It is far quieter, and unlike the Valley of Flowers you can camp on the meadow itself.

Is there mobile network and an ATM on the trek?

Indiahikes reports Airtel and BSNL signal along the trail. The last ATM is in Joshimath, so carry cash.

Do I need a permit for Chenap Valley?

Himalaya Shelter includes forest entry charges for Indian nationals in its package. We could not confirm the current official fee, so self-guided trekkers should check with the forest office in Joshimath.
