Know before you go
Good to know
- Mobile network
- Airtel works up to Sungri and Dumrera; Vodafone and BSNL are patchy in Rohru. Expect no signal once the trek starts.
- Last ATM
- Rohru – carry enough cash from there
- Nearest hospital
- Rohru for first care; Shimla (IGMC) for serious cases
- Water
- Streams in the forest above Dumrera and near the forest edge below Tangnu Bai; none between Tangnu Bai and Mural. The pond at Mural camp is not drinkable – usable water is about 500 m away. Treat all water; in winter it may have to be melted from snow.
Highlights
- A grassy summit at about 3,750 m with a small stone temple of Bhagwan Shiva and a 360° view
- Views of Shrikhand Mahadev, Hansabeshan and Kinnaur Kailash in Himachal and Bandarpoonch, Kalanag and Swargarohini in Uttarakhand
- Open meadows of Tangnu Bai above pine, oak and spruce forest on the fringe of Daranghati Wildlife Sanctuary
- A long ridge walk down from the summit to Ropra camp, and quiet Kath-Kuni villages at Dumrera
Risks
- The ledge between Tangnu Bai and Mural has a narrow section and two steep gullies within about 200 m; take care, especially on snow or after rain.
- Summit day starts before dawn on an exposed ridge above the tree line; turn back in bad weather.
- Night temperatures fall to about 0 to -12 °C in winter (Bikat Adventures).
- Monsoon rain (July–August) makes the boulder sections slippery and cuts visibility.
- The last 2 km of road to Dumrera is a rough off-road track that may be blocked after snow or rain.

Questions
How high is Mural Danda?
Indiahikes gives 12,300 ft (about 3,750 m), and satellite terrain data reads about 3,720 m for the summit. Bikat Adventures and a Tripoto trip report quote 14,000 ft (4,267 m), but no ground in the area reaches that height, so we use about 3,750 m.
Where does the Mural Danda trek start?
The Indiahikes route starts at Dumrera, a hamlet about 25 km (3 hours by jeep) from Rohru in Chirgaon tehsil, Shimla district, and ends at Sungri. Bikat Adventures starts and ends at Sungri instead.
Is Mural Danda suitable for beginners?
Operators sell it as a beginner summit trek (Indiahikes: Easy-Moderate; Bikat: Easy), but it needs fitness: Indiahikes asks for a 5 km run in under 38 minutes, and the ledge, gullies and summit ridge are demanding.
When is the best time to do Mural Danda?
December to March for snow, according to Bikat Adventures. Indiahikes also runs it outside winter and mentions wildflowers in early summer and after the monsoon. Avoid the July–August monsoon, when the trail is slippery.
Do I need a permit for Mural Danda?
The route skirts Daranghati Wildlife Sanctuary, and Indiahikes says the forest department needs your photo ID and a medical certificate before issuing trek permissions. We found no official fee, so self-guided trekkers should check with the forest office at Rohru or the DFO (Wildlife) before going.
