Know before you go

Good to know

Mobile network
BSNL and Jio work up to Sankri and other networks only up to Mori; signal on the trail itself is sporadic at best.
Last ATM
Purola, on the road from Dehradun; carry enough cash for the trek.
Nearest hospital
Mori or Purola for first care; Dehradun (8-9 hours away) for serious cases.
Water
Streams on the forest stretches between Sarutal and Badang and below Vijay Top; in winter water at the upper camps may have to be melted from snow. Boil or treat all water.

Highlights

  • A true valley-to-valley traverse: start in the Rupin valley and finish in the Supin valley
  • Vijay Top (about 3,800 m) with views of Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak and Kedarkantha
  • Wooden Garhwali villages such as Bhitri, Fitari, Dhara and Jakhol, and the Someshwar temple by the Supin river
  • Quiet meadow camps at Sarutal, Badang and Pachi Thach, far from the crowded Sankri trails

Risks

  • Day 4 is long (about 12 km) with a steep, narrow climb to Vijay Top and a sharp descent; weather can change quickly near the top.
  • In December to February the upper trail is under snow and night temperatures fall to about -5 to -10 °C, so microspikes, gaiters and warm layers are needed.
  • July to September monsoon rain makes forest trails slippery and roads to Naitwar and Sankri slow; one operator calls the weather then highly unpredictable.
  • Operators sell two different routes under this name; check whether your trip goes over Vijay Top or over the lower Rikatik Odi ridge.

Questions

Where does the Rupin Supin trek start and end?

The Vijay Top route sold by Himalayan Hikers and Trekup India starts at Khanyasni camp in the Rupin valley, about 235 km (9-10 hours) from Dehradun beyond Mori and Naitwar, and ends at Fitari village in the Supin valley, from where a jeep takes you to Sankri for the night.

How high and how long is the trek?

Operators quote about 32 km of walking over 6 days (4 trekking days plus two drive days). The high point is Vijay Top at about 3,800 m, crossed on day 4 between Badang camp and Pachi Thach.

Is there another Rupin Supin route?

Yes. Treks and Trails India and Himalaya Shelter run a version that starts at Himri, goes by jeep to Bheetri, and walks via Sarutaal, Kurla Thach and the Rikatik Odi ridge (about 3,520 m) down to Phitadi and Jakhol. It covers about 30 km in 6 days. It is a different route from the Vijay Top traverse, and not the much higher Rupin Pass trek.

When is the best time for the Rupin Supin trek?

Himalayan Hikers says the trek is open all year and recommends November to March for snow and July to September for green meadows and flowers. Himalaya Shelter recommends March to October for its route. Deep snow from December to February makes the Vijay Top climb harder.

Do I need a permit?

Operators include forest permits and camping fees in their packages, and Himalayan Hikers places Vijay Top in Govind Wildlife Sanctuary. We could not find a current official fee, so self-guided trekkers should check at the forest office in Mori or Sankri before starting.
