A steady descent of about 200 m into the valley and the same climb back out, with long stretches of boulder hopping on rock beds, scree patches and fallen trees; deeper sections of the canyon below need rappelling.

Know before you go

Good to know

Mobile network
Patchy on the Tamhini Ghat road; expect little or no signal down in the valley.
Last ATM
Paud on the Pune side or Kolad on the Raigad side; carry cash.
Nearest hospital
Paud or Mangaon for first care; Pune for serious cases.
Water
Clear rock pools near the campsite below the '+' junction; streams flow only after the monsoon and dry up later in the season. Carry 2 litres and treat any pool water.

Highlights

  • A valley that looks like a '+' sign from the Tamhini Ghat road, formed by four ridges meeting
  • Boulder hopping down a rock bed layered like steps, past dry falls that roar in the monsoon
  • Clear pools under 10-20 ft boulders at the campsite near the '+' junction
  • A 75-100 ft waterfall with a pool at the far end of the valley, and the canyon that drains down towards Devkund

Risks

  • The valley lies in Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary and is closed in the monsoon by order: all trails to Plus Valley were shut from 28 June to 30 September 2024, and the Raigad Collectorate closed Tamhini Sanctuary routes from 1 July to 30 September 2026. The Forest Department warns of action under the Wildlife Protection Act for illegal entry.
  • The Tamhini Ghat road (NH 753F, Paud-Mangaon) was closed to all traffic from 5 July 2026 after the road near Dongarwadi and Nive was washed away. No reopening notice was found as of mid-October 2026; confirm the road is open before you set out.
  • Pools in the valley are deeper than they look: a tourist from Pimpri-Chinchwad drowned in a Plus Valley pool in December 2023, and the body had to be recovered from a deep gorge. Do not swim unless you know the pool.
  • Much of the route is boulder hopping on smooth rock and scree; wet rock is very slippery and the rock bed is a waterfall channel in rain. The lower canyon pools need rappelling and should be left to equipped groups.
  • There is little shade on the upper slopes and no shop in the valley; the climb back out in the afternoon heat is tiring.

Questions

Is Plus Valley open now?

Plus Valley is in Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary and has been closed in the monsoon by Forest Department and district orders (28 June-30 September in 2024; Tamhini Sanctuary routes 1 July-30 September in 2026). It is usually walked from October. In 2026 the Tamhini Ghat road was also shut after a collapse near Dongarwadi, so check the road status before you go.

Why is it called Plus Valley?

Seen from the Tamhini Ghat road or from above, the valley's four arms meet like a '+' sign. Four hills surround the junction, and the trail reaches that '+' point after about two hours of descent.

How long is the Plus Valley trek?

Indiahikes gives 10-12 km and 6-7 hours for the return day from Tamhini Ghat; Treks and Trails India calls it about 9 km. Reaching the campsite takes about two hours from the road.

Can I go to Devkund from Plus Valley?

The canyon below the campsite continues down to Devkund, but only the first pool is reachable on foot; the next pools need rappelling. Devkund itself is normally reached from Bhira village, and it has its own monsoon ban.

Is Plus Valley good in winter?

Treks and Trails India says winter is the best time, when the rock beds are drier. Indiahikes notes the waterfalls in the valley run only in the monsoon, so winter visits see dry falls and still pools.
