Only 6 km in about 4 hours, but the trail drops from the Top Sengattupatti plateau through scrub into deeper forest and stream crossings, so the walk back is a steady climb; the official portal rates it moderate.

Per person, ex-Thuraiyur. Every walk here is guided: the official Trek Tamil Nadu fee (₹1,199 + 5% GST = about ₹1,259 per adult; the lower ₹899 rate comes to about ₹944, seen 18 Oct 2026) includes a forest guide. We found no private operator that sells this trail. The upper range is our estimate: the portal fee plus a taxi or bus from Thuraiyur (35 km) or Trichy and food.

Mobile network
Not confirmed by our sources; expect weak signal in the forest below the plateau.
Last ATM
Not confirmed; carry cash from Thuraiyur.
Nearest hospital
Top Sengattupatti Government Hospital / PHC (about 2 km); Thuraiyur or Trichy for serious cases

Highlights

  • A trail that drops from scrub and thorn bush into dry deciduous and then shaded semi-evergreen forest on the Pachamalai hills
  • Stream crossings past terraced fields where hill villagers grow millet
  • Birding: paradise flycatchers, drongos, munias and owlets, with frogs and toads near the water
  • Ends at a tribal settlement beside a large pond
  • Official Trek Tamil Nadu trail with a forest guide, about 85 km from Trichy

Risks

  • Wild boar and spotted deer live here (Trek Tamil Nadu); stay with the guide and the group.
  • The trail is mostly downhill on the way out, so the return to Top Sengattupatti is a climb; keep energy and water for it.
  • The portal's packing list includes leech socks and rain gear: expect leeches and slippery paths after rain.
  • Trekking in Tamil Nadu forests is allowed only through the official Trek Tamil Nadu booking; going in without it is not permitted.
  • Best months are not stated by any source; October to February is our estimate (cooler, post-monsoon). Check the portal for open dates.

Questions

How long is the Mamarathu Solai trek?

6 km in total and about 4 hours. The trail page lists it as two way (3 km out and 3 km back); the portal's July 2026 trail list gives 6 km and 4 hours.

Where does the Mamarathu Solai trek start?

At the reception point in Top Sengattupatti on the Pachamalai hills, Trichy district, about 35 km from Thuraiyur bus stand and 85 km from Trichy railway station. Parking is available.

Can I do the trek on my own?

No. It is a forest trail run by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, and trekking is allowed only through a Trek Tamil Nadu booking, which includes a forest guide.

How much does the Mamarathu Solai trek cost?

The official portal charges ₹1,199 per adult plus 5% GST, with a lower ₹899 rate also listed (seen 18 Oct 2026). It covers the permit, guide, insurance on the route and light snacks; transport to Top Sengattupatti is extra.
