Trekking days are short (4-5 km) until the ridge day, which is 8.5 km and 6-7 hours long with one water source, followed by a steep 8 km descent of about 900 m to Taluka. Parts of the ridge are narrow and covered in scree, and they can hold snow early in the season.

Know before you go

Good to know

Mobile network
Only BSNL and Jio work in Sankri and there is no reception on the forest trail; a weak Airtel, BSNL or Vodafone signal can sometimes be caught on top of the ridge.
Last ATM
Purola, on the road to Sankri; carry cash from Dehradun
Nearest hospital
Mori, about 21 km from Sankri, for first care; Dehradun or AIIMS Rishikesh for serious cases
Water
Streams on days 2 and 3 and at Bhoj Gadi and Pushtara camps; only one water source on the ridge day, so carry at least 2 litres from Bhoj Gadi. Boil or treat all water.

Highlights

  • A ridge walk of several kilometres at about 3,700 m with a near-continuous panorama of Swargarohini, Kala Nag (Black Peak), Bandarpoonch, Ranglana and Kedarkantha
  • Camping at Bhoj Gadi, a high meadow known for its sunsets behind Kedarkantha
  • Descending through the open Pushtara meadows and then an untouched forest of oak, rhododendron and conifers to Taluka
  • A traverse, not an out-and-back: you pass Juda Ka Talab on the way up and finish in the old village of Taluka on the Supin river

Risks

  • Parts of the ridge are narrow and covered in scree; early-season (May) groups may meet snow or verglas on the ridge and need microspikes.
  • The ridge day is long with one water source and is exposed to strong wind.
  • July-August monsoon rain makes the forest trail and steep descent to Taluka slippery; operators do not schedule the trek then.
  • The trail is closed in winter (December to March or April) because of heavy snow on the ridge.

Questions

How is Phulara Ridge different from the Kedarkantha trek?

Both start from Sankri and pass Juda Ka Talab, but Phulara Ridge turns away from the Kedarkantha summit trail. It climbs to Bhoj Gadi, walks the Phulara Ridge at about 3,700-3,760 m, and descends through Pushtara meadows to Taluka. Kedarkantha is a winter summit trek; Phulara Ridge is a summer and autumn ridge walk.

When is the best time to do Phulara Ridge?

May to June for green meadows, wildflowers and some early-season snow, and mid-September to November for clear views and golden meadows. The trail is closed in winter because of heavy snow, and the July-August monsoon is avoided.

Is Phulara Ridge suitable for beginners?

Operators grade it easy to moderate and suitable for fit beginners. The first two trekking days are short, but the ridge day is 8.5 km over 6-7 hours and the last day is a steep 8 km descent. Indiahikes asks trekkers to run 5 km in 35 minutes before the trek.

Is there mobile network on the trek?

Only BSNL and Jio work in Sankri. There is no signal on the forest trail, though a weak signal can sometimes be caught on top of the ridge. The last ATM is in Purola, so carry cash.

Do I need a permit for Phulara Ridge?

The trek lies in Govind Pashu Vihar National Park, so forest entry fees apply, and operators include them in the package. We could not confirm the current official fee, so self-guided trekkers should check at the forest office in Sankri.
